Job Description

Our client is seeking an experienced Indigenous Executive Director to join their team for a one-year contract.The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the Board of Directors.LeadershipParticipate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization.Proactively identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization.Act as a professional advisor to the Board of Directors on all aspects of the organization's activities.Foster effective teamwork between the Board and the Executive Director and between the Executive Director and staff.In addition to the Chair of the Board, act as a spokesperson for the organization.Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board as appropriate and jointly with the Board when appropriate.Represent the organization at community activities to enhance its profile.Operational planning and managementDevelop an operational plan incorporating goals and objectives aligned with the strategic direction.Ensure organizational operations meet the expectations of clients, the Board, and funders.Oversee the efficient day-to-day operations.Draft policies for Board approval and prepare procedures for implementation; review policies annually and recommend changes.Ensure personnel, client, donor, and volunteer files are securely stored, maintaining privacy and confidentiality.Support the Board by preparing meeting agendas and materials.Ensure compliance with legislative requirements annually.Program planning and managementOversee planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.Ensure programs contribute to the organization's mission and reflect Board priorities.Monitor day-to-day program delivery to maintain or improve quality.Oversee special projects' planning, execution, and evaluation.Human resources planning and managementDetermine staffing requirements for management and program delivery.Oversee HR policies, procedures, and practices, including job descriptions.Establish a positive, healthy, and safe work environment in accordance with legislation.Recruit, interview, and select qualified staff.Ensure staff receive orientation and training.Implement performance management processes, including ongoing monitoring and annual reviews.Coach and mentor staff to improve performance.Financial planning and managementCollaborate with staff and the Board to prepare budgets.Secure funding through research, fundraising plans, and proposals.Participate in fundraising activities.Approve expenditures within delegated authority.Ensure sound bookkeeping and accounting.Administer funds according to the budget and monitor cash flow.Provide regular financial reports to the Board.Ensure compliance with tax and withholding legislation.Community relations / advocacyEngage with stakeholders to inform them of organizational work and community changes.Build relationships with community groups, funders, politicians, and organizations.Identify and manage risks to the organization's people, property, finances, and reputation.Ensure appropriate insurance coverage and that staff understand its terms.QualificationsA University or College degree in a related field or equivalent experience.Five+ years of progressive management experience in the voluntary sector.Knowledge of nonprofit management principles and legislation.Understanding of community challenges, HR, financial management, and project management.Proficiency in word processing, email, and internet use.Working conditionsPrimarily office-based, with occasional non-standard workplaces.Standard work week, with evening, weekend, and overtime work for meetings and events.Application processSubmissions accepted until a candidate is identified.
