Position SummaryReporting to the Technical Specialist Anatomic Pathology and Medical Director of Laboratory Services, the Pathology Assistant (PA) is responsible for ensuring that the patients needs are met in a caring and professional manner and in accordance with the legislation, regulation, bylaws, and policies and procedures governing the Hospital and the Laboratory and through interaction with the Medical Laboratory Technologists and other health care professionals. The PA, under the supervision of the Technical Specialist and Pathologists, shall accept responsibility and be accountable to the patient, to him/herself and the employer to meet the ethical, legal and quality expectations of practice, performing all duties in keeping with the laboratory and the organizations mission, vision and values. Primary ResponsibilitiesEnsuring high quality patient-focused care through the timely delivery of laboratory services in accordance with the Hospitals Mission, Vision and Values Preparation, gross description and dissection of both small and large surgical specimens Photography of specimens Variety of department related administrative functions Safe handling of hazardous chemicals used in the pathology departmentCleaning and maintaining instruments, equipment and supplies Assisting in the Histology department and performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned Client service and communication Discard specimens according to established safety procedures Computer data entry and edit Specimen processing and triage Instrument maintenance and controls Preventative maintenance Supply inventory control and organization Quality assurance Participating in the orientation and training of new staff and students Participating in departmental/hospital in-service programs and contribute suggestions, which lead to enrichment of knowledge base Developing full knowledge of the content of manufacturers and departmental manuals related to equipment used within scope of practice Keeping knowledgeable and current with department policy and procedures within scope of practice Seeking opportunities to meet educational requirements as identified through ongoing competency assessment and to further develop own knowledge base Participating in Research/Quality Improvement programs carried out within the department or other departments within the organization Mandatory QualificationsBachelor of Science or EquivalentExperience:Accredited from a Pathologist Assistant Program is an asset Member in good standing of the Canadian Association of Pathologists is an assetMember in good standing of the Canadian Association of Pathologists MLT with grossing experience of complex specimens an assetExperience with autopsies is an asset Experience in an acute and complex continuing care settings preferred Mandatory CompetenciesDemonstrated ability to work both as, a member of a multidisciplinary team and an independent professional Excellent communication, interpersonal, critical thinking and time management skills Demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of Microsoft Office Safety (patient, worker & workplace) is a BCHS Corporate Priority.
