Current College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC) License Full Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) Mandatory Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) Mandatory Role and Facility Information St. Pauls Hospital is an inner city hospital within downtown Vancouver. It provides acute and short-term outpatient care for a complex population with comorbid illness that includes substance use. The focus of the hospital is on acute care and access for short-term outpatient care while working closely with community providers in the city. The patients seen within our services include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic illnesses and substance use with secondary psychosis. It is a population that requires an inter-disciplinary approach and good relationships within the community. This role will provide geriatric psychiatry: Assessment and treatment as part of an inpatient geriatric psychiatry consultation-liaison service at St. Pauls Hospital (SPH). This service receives referrals from the hospital acute services. Assessment and treatment on an outreach basis as part of the geriatric psychiatry outreach team (GPOT) at SPH and MSJ, collaborating and working with the outreach nurse(s) and other interdisciplinary team members. This team will receive referrals from community primary care physicians, from acute inpatient units at SPH/MSJ and from community health units. Assessment and treatment as part of the Dementia Caregiver Resilience Clinic at St. Pauls Hospital. The clinic provides support to at-risk caregivers of persons with dementia, utilizing group therapy, mindfulness, Cognitive-Behavioral techniques and role play. The clinic involves social work, occupational therapy, and psychiatry. In addition, the role will be expected to: Support educational opportunities for the community regarding management of patients with late-life psychiatric illnesses. Be involved in teaching specific students, residents and fellows assigned to the service. Participate in evaluation and quality improvement programs for the service. An interest in acute care psychiatry with a complex population is essential to the position. An ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurses and other team members is of vital importance in this work. Good verbal and written communication, as well as reliability and consistency, are important for successful applicants. Our department prides itself on collegiality and support of its members. St. Pauls Hospital is a teaching hospital and there is a requirement to provide supervision to residents and students. In addition, the department is looking for members who are interested in research, leadership and quality improvement. In accordance with Canadian employment and immigration requirements, preference will be given to citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and a completed Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry is required.
