Job SummaryThe Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering is responsible for providing technical expertise for locomotive specifications, documentation as well as internal, external, and regulatory requirements. The incumbent works with internal and external partners to define CNs locomotive roadmap to establish a minimal number of locomotive configurations that maximizes safety, productivity, reliability and availability while minimizing cost. The role communicates technical details surrounding locomotive engineering design and works closely with Reliability and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). Moreover, the incumbent oversees the work of the Manager, Mechanical Engineering Locomotives.Main Responsibilities Locomotive specification documentation and roadmapDefine, maintain and own CNs locomotive specifications with a key focus on safety, reliability, availability and dwellDevelop a fleet strategy that accounts for the necessary specification and component design life for all locomotives in conjunction with the Reliability teamWork with Transportation and Safety leadership to account for crew requirements and identify changes needed to the locomotive fleet to drive targeted improvementsParticipate in the development of detailed specifications for all locomotive and component purchasesWork with CNs Financial Planning on cost and benefit analyses and business cases to measure the financial impact of recommended locomotive modifications and specificationsContinuous Improvement through Vendor and Industry FocusWork closely with the Reliability team and Fleet Leaders to understand the current pain points affecting CNs locomotive fleet, and collaborate with OEMs to improve components that do not meet specificationsParticipate in discussions with locomotive vendors and other Class 1 railroads to identify and implement industry best practicesSupport Procurement and Supply Management in negotiations with locomotive vendorsInfluence the product roadmap of CNs vendors to ensure that its future needs are considered when planning productsRepresent CN on industry committees and at conferences while promoting its approach with regards to locomotive design and reliabilityLeveraging Data to Improve Asset UtilizationReview and leverage data analysis to better understand how CNs locomotive fleet is used and maintained in conjunction with the Reliability teamUse the insights gained through the data analysis to work with the OEMs to design longer lasting componentsSupport Mechanical leadership on maintenance and inspection work scopes, reliability and root cause analysis, as requiredStaff ManagementEstablish employee objectives and carry out regular touch-base meetingsProvide mentorship, guidance, support, coaching and feedback to direct reportsTrain and mentor new employeesCommunicate company policies and goalsPrepare and monitor employees development plansWorking ConditionsThe role is performed in a combination of office (60%) and outdoor environment in various types of weather conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday (40%). The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.
