UBC boasts the most successful program in Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS), as Thunderbird teams have won over 100 CIS national championships to date, adding eight banners in the U.S.-based National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).The Alumni Engagement Manager will work closely with the Senior Director of Development and the Senior Director, Alumni Engagement in the development and implementation of the alumni relations program for the Department of Athletics and Recreation. The role will be instrumental in developing and managing an alumni program in order to advance the Department of Athletics and Recreations strategic goals. The optimal goal is the development of lifelong meaningful relationship between the Department of Athletics and Recreation and UBC alumni affiliated with athletics.This position will lead all alumni engagement events, volunteer activity, and communications. Strategic Alumni Relationsa. Works closely with the Senior Director of Development, and Senior Director, Alumni Engagement to implement strategic plans, in collaboration with the Athletics and Recreation department to leverage alumni engagement, knowledge of alumni, interaction with students, alumni networks and strengthen partnerships with identified priority alumni communities. This also includes managing volunteers, communications strategies and supporting volunteer-initiated activities.b. Supports and builds connections with key individual alumni to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to mobilize alumni to be ambassadors in coordination with the Athletics DAE team.c. Identifies opportunities with strategic internal and external communities to build relationships of institutional value and engage key alumni to advance those relationships within their respective communities.d. Leads strategy development to recognized engaged alumni and volunteers, providing opportunities for deeper engagement (ie. Nominations for UBC Hall of Fame, Alumni Builder, Alumni Achievement Award and BC Sports Hall of Fame)e. Plans and executes a number of high impact events with strategic sport based communities to develop and engage strategic partnerships.f. Has a deep understanding of the University sports environment and manages an annual plan of varsity alumni engagement opportunities in a competitive, high performance, regular and post season environment2. Communicationsa. Works closely with the Senior Director of Development and the Senior Director, Alumni Engagement to implements alumni strategies and manage communications with alumni communities. This includes articulating Athletics aspirations and needs to DAE and alumni UBC , to ensure alignment and maximum impact of resource investments.b. executes alumni communication strategy aligned with the overall Athletics and Recreation department strategy and priorities and integrates central alumni UBC and, FORWARD, the campaign for UBC messaging. Working in close partnership with Athletics and Recreations and the Alumni UBC communications team, reach alumni effectively using a variety of communication channels.c. Develops, writes, and executes regular alumni newsletters for various teams/sports and website content and ensuring a high degree of professionalism and accuracy, including compelling stories and profiles on key alumni and award recipients. d. Recommends, and executes data-driven marketing and communication strategies to promote alumni activities, programs and services, strategically driving alumni engagement and participation.e. Develops content for alumni communications such as team e-newsletters, UBC Magazine, departmental communications, Athletics and Recreation website and other collateral materials.f. Develops, writes, and edits newsletters and alumni website content and ensuring a high degree of professionalism and accuracy for alumni communications materials, including profiles on key alumni and award recipients.3. Event Managementa. Working closely with the Department of Athletics and Recreation and alumni UBC , oversees and coordinates a series of high impact events such as Big Block, Hall of Fame, Winter Classic, and Homecoming. Additionally, they will be responsible for the development, planning and execution of alumni events for various Thunderbird varsity teams.b. Works closely with the Senior Director of Development to anticipate institutional and Department of Athletics and Recreation milestones and integrates these activities into a strategic alumni engagement strategy.c. Develops ideas and plans for new alumni and volunteer initiatives to advance UBC and Alumni UBC 's strategic plans with the Department of Athletics and Recreation's strategic plan and priorities in collaboration with the leadership team.d. Develops operational-level plans, ensuring alignment with the departmental and organizational strategic plans and priorities. Is a member of the Athletics and Recreational operational leadership team which meets quarterly to align operational planning across marketing, communications, facilities and event operations.e. Serves as point of contact for groups planning athletic reunions or milestones4. Volunteer Managementa. Partners with Athletics and Recreation members and staff to integrate and promote alumni participation in volunteer opportunities.b. Assists in building volunteer capacity within the Athletics and Recreation department to foster a stronger sense of community amongst alumni and students.c. Identifies, researches, and recruits high-level alumni volunteers, using various communication and social channels such as LinkedIn to identify and locate alumnid. Partners with department members and staff to integrate and promote alumni participation in existing and expanding volunteer opportunities.e. Assists in building volunteer capacity within the department to foster a stronger sense of community amongst alumni and students.f. Develops and implements volunteer recognition opportunities.5. Student Engagementa. Connect student athletes with alumni through various initiatives, leverage existing student affinity and leadership groups across the athletics department and teamsb. Identify opportunities such as events, mentorship opportunities, and communications to further develop the relationship between alumni and students.6. Fundraisinga. Working closely with the Senior Director of Development, and Senior Director, Alumni Engagement, ensures fundraising plans and strategies are well integrated with overall Development plans.b. Working closely with Development staff, actively participate in the identification and cultivation of major gift prospects.c. Working closely with the Development staff, collaborates on strategic fundraising appeals and sponsorship opportunities for alumni donors.d. Works closely with development staff to write alumni profiles that could be use for fundraising or stewardship purposes.7. Data Managementa. Ensures the timely and accurate transfer of information into the database.b. Ensures the accuracy and thoroughness of alumni data.c. Develops and maintains a deep understanding of the University Information Management System.d. Analyses data; data-informed and data driven when planning and executing alumni activities/programs.e. For example, the incumbent will help identify and nurture relationships with influential alumni who may be approached by the department for key leadership roles.The incumbent will liaise regularly with senior administration, prominent alumni and donors as well as significant friends and partners of the university.The Alumni Engagement Manager is expected to exercise judgment, diplomacy and tact in all interactions.
