The business units are supported by enterprise-wide functions that set strategic direction, establish standards and provide governance, as well as supporting the business through shared services, centres of excellence and business partnering.Reporting to the Regional Director of Environment for the North America region, the Social, Environment, and Regulatory Approvals (SERA) Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of the regulatory approvals process for the Schaft Creek Projects. This includes the SERA process, detailed plans to support all stages, and risk management.This outstanding candidate will engage in meaningful relationships and develop applications consistent with provincial/federal environmental assessment. They will lead the implementation of strategies to achieve Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples.This position will work closely with the Schaft Creek Project team, North America Regional Director of Community and Indigenous Relations, as well as other leaders within the organization! The SERA Manager must be self-motivated, collaborate well across multi-disciplinary teams, have strong organizational skills, alongside have a technical understanding of environmental fields.Don't miss out on this outstanding opportunity to be part of one of Canada's leading mining companies and join our team!Responsibilities:Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and proceduresLead a diverse team of project personnel and consultants and cultivate a workplace culture based on respect, collaboration, inclusivity, and responsibilityBuild effective relationships with government representatives, regulators, Indigenous communities, communities of interest, and environmental organizationsLiaise directly with Indigenous Peoples to build trust-based, respectful, and sustained relationships, recognizing rights and knowledge systemsWork collaboratively with Indigenous Peoples to support their decision-making processes and advance the project in a manner consistent with achieving FPICImplement Indigenous engagement strategies that reflect their priorities and support mutual benefits over the life of the projectBuild effective internal relationships to advance project stages including project steering, technical and SERA committeesDevelop a comprehensive SERA Execution Plan that outlines the overall strategy for the projects life cycle. This includes detailed plans for upcoming stages with all governmental and regulatory approvalCurate detailed engagement strategies for communities, Indigenous Peoples, government and regulatory engagement, and communicationsAdditionally, the role must:Manage the collection of social and environmental baseline data. Oversee the preparation and review of the social environmental impact assessment and approval packages for the projectEnsure alignment with Teck policies and standards, including Sustainability Management Standards and the Indigenous Peoples PolicyCoordinate negotiations with: government, regulatory agencies, Indigenous government organizations, and lease holders on conditions, commitments, agreements, and mitigation actionsIdentify key risks, issues, and opportunities related to advancement of Tecks business strategy, including the strategic direction for regulatory approvalsDevelop a register of SERA-related risks as part of the overall project risk registerEstablish resource plans and budgets, ensuring the optimum mix of consultants, contractors, and internal resourcesFulfill reporting obligations (i.e., written and presentations) to facilitate seamless integration with broader project team and senior management on the SERA statusManage commitments, conditions and strategies to the successful transition to operational teams. Support their fulfillment of project commitments and regulatory complianceProvide mentorship to team members and consultants. This includes alignment with Project Delivery and SERA frameworks, participation in risk analyses, and providing direction on project scope and issues resolutionQualifications:Degree or equivalent experience in environmental-related field or engineering10+ years of demonstrated experience in leading environmental assessments, alongside sophisticated regulatory applications for major mining ornatural resource projects through provincial and federal processesKnowledge of relevant legislations is considered an asset. This includes environmental assessment legislation, BC Mines Act, BC Water Sustainability Act, BC Environmental Management Act, federal Fisheries Act, Federal Impact Assessment ActA high level of scientific knowledge and practical experience in mining areas such as regulatory approvals, water and air quality management, ecological/human health risk assessments, etcSophisticated written, verbal and interpersonal communication and presentation skills in diverse settingsDemonstrated ability to build relationships with people at all levels of the organization and government officials, Indigenous groups, and other communities to influence outcomesStrong leadership skills including ability to manage a technically-diverse staff and consultants to leverage abilities and provide support where vitalA critical thinker who resolves problems with rational and suitable solutions in a timely and decisive mannerMotivated and adaptable self-starter who can manage projects simultaneously in a fast paced environmentAbility to travel approximately 30% on average annuallyHigh degree of critical thinking and analytical skills with strong technical writing skillsShow curiosity through asking well formulated questions and by taking personal risk to raise points of creative tensionDeliver with a fit-for-purpose approach focusing on the key levers or inputs that have a material impact on positive outcomes and resultsAbility to represent Teck and the project in potentially challenging public settingsWhy Join Us?At Teck, we offer more than just a job we provide a pathway to personal and professional enrichment.
