There is an emphasis on fostering understanding, healing, and resilience in a region brimming with unique social challenges and immense potential for transformative change.JOB SUMMARYReporting to the Manager of Legal Services, the Legal Counsel - Employment will be responsible for providing legal advice and support on a wide array of employment matters for the Inuvialuit Group of Companies and affiliates as required. This role will provide strategic legal advice and support on all employment-related matters, ensuring compliance with federal, territorial, and provincial employment and labour laws and internal policies. The successful candidate will work closely with Human Resources, senior leadership, and external counsel to manage risk, resolve disputes, develop policies and procedures, and support a fair and compliant workplace.ACCOUNTABILITIESThe Employment Legal Counsel will:Provide legal advice on employment law matters including hiring, terminations, workplace investigations, accommodations, and disciplinary actions.Draft, review, and negotiate employment contracts, severance agreements.Assist in the development and implementation of workplace policies and procedures.Advise on compliance with federal, territorial, and provincial employment legislation (e.g., ESA, OHSA, Human Rights Codes).Support HR in managing employee relations issues and internal investigations.Represent the company in employment-related litigation, arbitration, and mediation, including managing external counsel.Monitor and communicate changes in employment law and assess their impact on the organization.Develop and deliver standard operating procedures and training for HR and IRC affiliates as required.Keep management updated on employment law topics and best practices.Support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives from a legal perspective.Perform other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSApplicants must be/have:Law Degree (JD/LLB) from a recognized law school for qualification to practice in Canada.Admitted member in good standing of a law society in Canada, and upon acceptance of this role, is or will become a member of the Law Society of the Northwest Territories.Approximately 5-7 years of employment law experience, preferably from a major law firm.Experience working with multiple stakeholder groups with demonstrated ability to meet targets.ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONSSound legal judgment and business acumen, including the ability to understand long-term business goals and objectives and to work to ensure the terms and conditions of contracts and permits support the achievement of those objectives.Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate with internal business clients, support staff, external resources, and other collaborators.Ability to identify risks and opportunities and provide sound advice that contributes to well-informed decision-making.Ability to analyze and evaluate alternatives and develop recommendations related to a wide range of legal and business issues.Team player with ambition, talent and drive.Strong analytical, advocacy, organizational and interpersonal skills.Attention to detail.Ability to explain complex information simply.Ability to handle sensitive legal information with the highest level of discretion and confidentiality, maintaining trust within the organization.Ability to adapt quickly to changing legal needs and priorities, supporting a dynamic legal environment.
