Legal Counsel works within the Legal and Constitutional Law Division of the Department of Justice. This division was awarded the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association Legal Team of the Year in 2023. Under the direction of the Deputy Minister of Justice and the Director of Legal and Constitutional Law, the incumbent provides legal services to Cabinet, government departments, and public agencies. Responsibilities include representing the government in court and tribunal proceedings, negotiations, and providing legal advice on commercial law, contracts, procurement, labour, the Nunavut Agreement, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The candidate must have a Common Law degree (JD or LLB) from a recognized Canadian university or a Certificate of Qualification from the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. Eligibility for unrestricted membership in the Law Society of Nunavut or good standing in a Provincial or Territorial Bar is required. The candidate should demonstrate excellent English skills, sound judgment, and understanding of client needs, typically supported by at least two years legal experience. Experience in Corporate Commercial Law, Litigation, Environmental Law, or Construction Law is an asset. A satisfactory criminal record check is required. Official languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French. Applicants may submit resumes in any of these languages. Fluency in multiple official languages, knowledge of Inuit culture, land, and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are assets. An eligibility list may be created for future vacancies. Priority will be given to Nunavut Inuit who self-identify under the Nunavut Agreement, in accordance with the Priority Hiring Policy. Government employees on probation must obtain approval from their departments deputy head to apply. Possession of a criminal record may not disqualify candidates; considerations will be made based on the scope of the position.
