JOB DESCRIPTION **Position Title:** Director of Transportation **Department:** Operations **Position Reports to:** Vice President of Operations **Position Summary:** The Director of Transportation will play a crucial role in leading, managing, and driving accountability for our drivers, both company and owner-operators. This role reports directly into the VP of Operations. The successful candidate will be a strong leader with extensive experience in the transportation industry, specifically in managing drivers, training, safety protocols, and equipment management, inbound freight and routing. The candidate will be responsible for optimizing driver performance, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and managing our fleet of tractors, trailers, ensuring we are growing our inbound freight network and meeting all KPIs as it relates to safety, routing and driver performance. They will also be a decisive and results oriented leader, who fosters teamwork and positive employee relations and utilizes technical skills to influence, motivate change and meet organizational goals. Reporting to the Director of Transportation will be the Fleet Manager, Transportation Manager. Logistics Manager and Inbound Manager. The incumbent will support Flanagans Purpose, Vision, Mission and Values in everything they do. **Key Responsibilities:** **Leadership and Team Management:** * Provide strong leadership to the transportation team, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. * Recruit, train, and develop a high-performing team. * Set performance goals, provide regular feedback, and conduct performance evaluations. * Encourage a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement. * Leading in a matrix organization where it is imperative that operations teams, functional leaders and Operations Managers understand and appreciate the reason for and value of the initiatives and programs being introduced. * Influencing and motivating leaders and teams that have no direct reporting relationship to this role. * Managing change effectively to ensure minimal disruption to business operations and positive impact to operational successes. **Driver Management:** * Oversee the Transportation Manager and a team of driver supervisors, supporting the day-to-day operations, ensuring on-time delivery and exceptional customer service. * Develop and implement driver-training programs to enhance skills, improve safety, and promote operational excellence. * Monitor driver performance metrics, such as on-time delivery, fuel efficiency, and customer satisfaction. * Address driver performance issues promptly and implement corrective actions as necessary. **Safety and Compliance:** * Develop and enforce comprehensive safety policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulations. * Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify and mitigate potential risks. * Collaborate with Health and Safety to promote a safety-first culture. * Ensure all incidents are investigated and corrective measures are implemented. * Ensures all Food Safety policies, procedures and HACCP guidelines are followed. * Ensures timely follow-up with all required corrective and preventative actions as needed. * Ensure employees complete all Health & Safety, food safety and quality assurance training as required. **Equipment Management:** * Oversee the Fleet Manager ensuring maintenance and repair of the company''s fleet and other equipment are completed timely. * Develop and execute a preventive maintenance program to minimize downtime and ensure maximum equipment reliability. * Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely availability of parts and services. * Monitor equipment utilization and recommend strategies for optimizing efficiency and reducing costs. **Routing and Inbound Freight:** * Develop and implement strategies around Routing to increase pieces per truck and reduce miles. * Work with Category Management/ Supply Chain to develop a strategy to grow our inbound network. * Analyze data and identify trends to drive continuous improvement initiatives. **Performance Monitoring and Reporting:** * Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of transportation operations. **Performance Monitoring and Reporting:** * Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of transportation operations. * Analyze data and identify trends to drive continuous improvement initiatives. **Decision-making:** * Makes independent decisions on a daily basis and in collaboration with functional leaders and Operation Managers as well as the VP, which will positively impact the overall business operations and effect appropriate change. **Relationships:** * All functional leaders across all Flanagan branches * Warehouse Operation Managers and Supervisors * President and Senior Leadership Team * Fuel, Services and Equipment providers * 3rd Party Carriers * Owner Operators **Required Qualifications:** * Minimum 8 years experience required in a similar role within distribution and transportation. * Strong knowledge of regulatory issues, MTO WSIB, Ministry of Labour, CFIA etc. * A varied background in food distribution, transportation, logistics, maintenance, and financial management resulting in total capability and effectiveness to manage in a multi-location operation. * Knowledge of 6 Sigma, process improvement methodologies. * College or University diploma/degree with focus on business, operations management, transportation and logistics. * Knowledge of quality (TQM, Six Sigma, HACCP. SQF, BRC, or other Food Safety accreditations) methodology and experience in implementing such programs in an operational environment. * Experience in food service or cold chain strongly preferred. * Excellent leadership and management skills - is a leader by nature and is comfortable directing and motivating multiple teams within a matrix environment, while capitalizing on competencies. * High resistance to stress and pressure - ability to work in a fast-paced environment, effectively managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines. * Proven expertise in creating and deploying strategic and tactical plans - able to translate organizational strategy into functional imperatives. * Genuine interpersonal skills and strong ability to communicate orally and in writing. * Excellent planning, problem solving skills, analytical skills and investigation skills. * Able to build consensus, resolve conflicts and negotiate. * Able to take initiative and effect change, demonstrating exceptional prioritizing and organizational skills. * Experienced leader, influencing various cross-functional teams. * Strong working knowledge of MS Office products including Excel. * Previous experience working with a Transportation Management System. * Must consistently demonstrate a high level of integrity, dependability and professionalism at all times. **Unique Requirements:** * Will be expected to travel regularly to other branch locations in Ontario. * Must have valid drivers license and own vehicle, which can be used for business purposes as, required.
