Job Description

Health PEI is building on the current model of pain care to advance a team-based collaborative care approach that will improve and sustain service delivery at the Provincial Pain Clinic. Team-based collaborative care occurs when a number of health providers with different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, caregivers and communities to deliver care so that the right care is provided at the right time by the right provider. This position is a member of the Provincial Pain Clinic Team, and reports to the Manager of Specialty Clinics. The primary responsibility of the Psychologist is to provide a wide range of psychological services for patients referred to tertiary specialty clinic for chronic pain. These services include professional consultation, psychological assessment and testing, clinical intervention and treatments (individual, family, and group work), referrals, education, and engaging best practices and evidence-based models. The Psychologist provides clinical expertise and collaboration with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to support the best possible outcomes and care plans. The Psychologist also works in partnership with the clinics multidisciplinary team and in collaboration with other community-based health services to support capacity development and knowledge exchange. Duties will include: Conduct psychological assessments to evaluate the mental health needs of patients suffering from chronic pain. Knowledge of appropriate psychometric assessments with specific reference to pain e.g. Pain Patient Profile - Third Edition (P3), Survey of Pain Attitudes (SOPA), Chronic Pain Coping Inventory (CPC) or any other relevant tests. Knowledge of personality assessments and use of tests such as Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory- third Edition (MMPI 3), Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) or the Millon Multiphasic Personality Inventory Fourth Edition (MCMI IV). Choose, administer, score, and interpret psychological tests to assess cognitive abilities, achievement levels, attention abilities, emotional functioning, personality functioning, and mental health disorders within the scope of practice (i.e., Wechsler Intelligence Scale, Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, etc.). Perform diagnostic interviews (structured and unstructured) with clients to collect relevant information that will aid in the diagnosis of mental health problems and illnesses; determine when consultation with other professionals would be advisable (medical, neurological, psychiatric, legal). Utilize and apply extensive knowledge of case management principles, child development, family systems, cognitive behavioural, supportive, family, evidence-based modalities, and group therapy, and discern which approaches are best suited to the situation and clinical impression. Develop and implement individualized treatment plans that incorporate findings of the assessment and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques, and other therapeutic modalities. Extensive knowledge of DSM 5, psychopathology and psychiatric disorders is required. Monitor patient progress and adjust therapeutic interventions as needed to achieve optimal outcomes. Provide individual and group therapy sessions based on patients needs to help patients manage pain-related psychological distress and improve coping strategies. Stay current with advancements in pain psychology and contribute to continuous professional development Write comprehensive reports which integrate all the results and make relevant recommendations for staff and clients. Maintain accurate and confidential patient records in compliance with healthcare regulations and clinic policies. Maintain and protect confidential records and case reporting consistent with policy, procedures, and ethical standards, as part of the case management process Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure holistic patient care. Communicate effectively with team members and provide opportunities for collaboration and coordination with other community mental health sites, psychiatry, acute care, and addiction services to improve service quality, client outcomes, and improved population health. Foster a supportive and positive clinic environment through professionalism, empathy, and a commitment to patient well-being. Provide professional consultation to the responsible provider on individual case matters for clients experiencing mental health conditions. Educate patients and their families about the psychological impact of chronic pain and effective management strategies. Participating in providing staff training, workshops, and information sessions to the community and other healthcare professionals to support capacity building for pain care across the province. Participating in the development and implementation of administrative and clinical programs as directed by the supervisor. Assisting with the monitoring and evaluation of services provided (providing statistics, case reviews, literature reviews, etc.). Assess and respond to crisis/emergency situations (i.e., suicide risk assessment and intervention). Provide service through Open Access Counselling and scheduled booking. Other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology, with training and supervised practice with community mental health and addictions. Must be eligible for registration with the PEI Psychology Registration Board, registration will be required as a condition of employment. Where currently registered, must be a member in good standing. Considerable experience providing mental health treatment. Demonstrated proficiency in core clinical competencies of mental health treatment, which include psychological testing, client-clinician relationship formation, professional autonomy and accountability, clinical assessment and formulation skills, ethical decision-making, and therapeutic interventions with individuals, groups, families, and case management. Demonstrated substantive knowledge of, and practice in, conceptualization, assessment, and various evidence-based therapeutic approaches. Demonstrated effective professional skills, including time management, interpersonal skills, oral and written skills, effective team building skills, and collaborative and consultative practice skills. Competent computer skills, including common word processing, database, and electronic communication software, electronic record keeping. Capacity to know and operate within the union collective agreements, employer policies, Mental Health Policies, and Standards. Able to function with a high degree of autonomy. Other Qualifications: Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, DSM 5, FOIPP, Consent to Treatment Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Child Protection Act, and other legislative frameworks as needed.
