We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Engineering Lab Technician to join our Engineering Lab. The ideal candidate will work on a diverse range of gas-burning product types for various project objectives in an accredited SMTC lab based on ISO 10725. Projects would include: product certification, assisting engineers in evaluating product performance, and conducting reliability and safety tests. Additionally, fulfilling other lab duties such as maintaining laboratory equipment and records in compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements and supporting the laboratorys status as an accredited SMTC lab based on ISO 10725. Reporting to the Engineering Lab Manager, this position is on-site in our Mississauga, Ontario, facility. This is a full-time, permanent role that is a replacement for headcount. **Major Accountability:** * Support the management and oversight of Agency/Regulatory compliance of our products and processes. * Evaluation and mitigation of skills and infrastructure gaps in direct reports and our facilities, suggesting training, capital improvements and execution of tasks to improve technical capabilities and performance. **Key Tasks & Responsibilities:** * Conduct compliance testing on gas and electric cooking equipment per global compliance standards (e.g., UL, CSA, IEC, EN, ANSI). * Prepare test setups and perform laboratory tests, including gas combustion analysis, electrical safety, and other agency-required tests. * Record and analyze test data, prepare accurate technical reports, and document findings in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 procedures. * Perform internal audit testing for our certified products regularly. * Operate and maintain laboratory test equipment, calibration systems, and instrumentation. * Assist in prototype assembly and troubleshooting for new or modified gas and electric cooking equipment. * Follow and enforce safety procedures for handling gas and electric systems and pressurized equipment. * Collaborate with design, quality, and manufacturing teams to resolve product issues and improve testing methods. * Support root cause analysis and failure investigations using standard lab tools and techniques. * Maintain lab cleanliness, organization, and calibration schedules for all testing equipment. **Qualifications** * **Specialized Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities** + Ability to read, interpret and perform testing by engineering standards (i.e. CSA, UL, ANSI, EN, IEC, etc.) + Hands-on experience with tools and laboratory instruments + Ability to read technical drawings, schematics, and test procedures. + Strong troubleshooting skills. + Robust organizational, documentation, and communication skills. * **Education and Experience** + Associate degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electronics, HVAC, or related field. + TSSA Gas Technician Certificate G.3 is minimum; G.2 is preferred + 5+ years of experience in a laboratory setting, R&D, or product testing role, preferably relating to gas appliances or gas-burning equipment + Familiarity with gas systems, combustion principles, and pressure/flow measurement tools, gas regulators, orifices, burners, and igniters * **Working Conditions** + Heavy computer use. + Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and capable with performing data analysis + Primarily lab-based, with occasional support on the production floor or in test kitchens. + Exposure to gas flames, heat, and electric systems (with appropriate PPE and ventilation). + Flexible work hours may be required during test cycles or product trials. + Ability to stand & walk on concrete 100% of the day, ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, lift and carry 35 lbs. * Garland, a Welbilt brand, has been a leading manufacturer for over 60 years which designing and producing a full line of commercial ovens, ranges, griddles, grills, conveyor ovens & countertop cooking equipment.
