Please submit your resume and cover letter in one file (PDF or Word) and upload using only the Resume feature within the application prior to 11:59 pm on June 13, 2025 How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team: The Livestock Assistant supports the day to day care of a diverse group of animals including meeting the animals basic needs through feeding, grooming and stall cleaning regimes. This role supports the delivery of educational programs by maintaining knowledge of 19th century agricultural practices. In absence of the Livestock Superintendent, the Livestock Assistant provides site guidance and direction to staff and is responsible for all animal care decisions and programs. Major Responsibilities: Strong ability to engage with the public to interpret and share knowledge about farm animals, their care, and nineteenth-century agricultural practices in an educational and accessible manner Conducts tasks related to daily animal care regimes for rare breeds and heritage breed livestock which includes fowl, sheep, goats, rabbits and horses. Provides full range of basic animal care, such as, but not limited to, feeding, grooming, exercising and stall cleaning regimes Supports the Livestock Superintendent in the healthcare needs of animals including diet, basic health checks and advanced level antibiotic treatment administered via oral administration, intramuscular and/or subcutaneous injections, as well as other treatments such as for abscesses, de-worming, louse and mite control Assists with the implementation of a Leicester Sheep breeding program and coordinates livestock-themed educational program logistics Supports the training of animals to ensure animal comfort and safe animal behaviour when near the public and staff Sources and purchases heritage breed poultry on an as-needed basis for breeding purposes, under the direction of the Livestock Superintendent. Evaluates the flock annually and coordinates the sale of surplus poultry to promote overall flock safety and to contain flock within the desired population size Conducts regularly assessment of health and safety risks across the site Identifies and addresses potential hazards to animals, including predator control, pasture management of noxious plants (ex: thistle, burdock, deadly Night Shade), disease prevention and control, and weather conditions In absence of the Livestock Superintendent , ensures staff/volunteers/contractors, as applicable, comply with health & safety policies, and other TRCA policies, as applicable in various work environments What will you need to succeed: Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses) Post-secondary diploma or degree in Agriculture or a related field Post-secondary certificate in Equine Studies Experience 2+ years of experience with large animals, farm or agriculture setting Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies Knowledge of farm animal nutrition, genetics, health and care practices Knowledge of livestock behaviour and training and health and safety practices around large animals Applied skills in horse driving, sheep shearing, and lambing (birthing) Strong communication skills to provide clear and concise communication in both non-emergency and emergency situations Computer proficiency in MS Office suite including online software such as MS teams, , and SharePoint Required to lift or carry objects that could weigh up to 50 pounds What TRCA has to offer you: As part of a progressive team you will have the opportunity to make a positive impact to preserving and protecting nature, while maintaining a balance between the natural environment and built environment.
