Team and Role: The Networking & Observability Team builds infrastructure for low-overhead observability and communication between MongoDB Server nodes, clients, and other services. We operate close to the bottom of the stack, significantly impacting database performance and robustness. Recent projects include making our RPC stack architecture highly performant and integrating OpenTelemetry for faster diagnosis of performance issues and test failures. Lets build a faster, more reliable, and highly observable database system together. This role can be based out of our Toronto office or remotely from anywhere in North America. Candidate Profile Minimum 12 years of experience in programming, debugging, and performance tuning distributed and/or highly concurrent C/C++ software systems. Strong fundamentals in systems, including multi-threaded programming, performance profiling, and expert-level network programming. Familiarity with database internals or core data processing system components. Knowledge of the observability ecosystem and best practices. Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills, with a strong desire to collaborate and mentor engineers. Strong time and project management skills, with realistic assessments of project scope and complexity. Responsibilities Lead architecture and implementation of low-level networking components to enhance performance, scalability, cost-efficiency, and resiliency of MongoDB Server. Design and implement observability improvements for quick and accurate diagnosis of production issues. Handle networking-related customer escalations and mentor teammates in doing the same. Develop production-ready database code in C++, improve existing code, and mentor team members for higher quality code. Maintain high standards for code quality, security, durability, availability, and performance. Write and improve unit and integration tests in C++, Javascript, and Python. Diagnose test failures, identify and fix bugs, and prevent future bugs. Investigate performance impacts of code changes to prevent regressions. Interview candidates for advanced engineering roles. Develop expertise on cutting-edge database, networking, and observability developments. Lead major projects and collaborate across teams on large initiatives. Advise Product Management on technical direction and project dependencies. Contribute to product roadmaps in collaboration with leadership. Success Metrics Within the first month, understand MongoDBs networking and observability architecture and fix initial bugs. Within three months, contribute to C++ development for upcoming releases and resolve customer/test issues. Within six months, take on code review responsibilities and contribute to new feature design. Within twelve months, lead development of new features, mentor engineers, and influence the technical roadmap.
