The Opportunity Reporting directly to the General Counsel, this position is responsible for providing legal advice and counsel for the Toronto Police Service (TPS) in relation to all aspects of criminal, civil and corporate law. What you will do: The successful candidate will participate in the management and team building of a highly skilled and professional in-house legal practice capable of servicing the needs of the Toronto Police Service. Duties and responsibilities include: the provision of legal advice and counsel in matters of criminal law, policing law, privacy law, administrative law and civil procedure; advocate for the interests of the Toronto Police Service before all levels of court and various administrative tribunals, including conducting professional regulation prosecutions and appeals under the Police Services Act and the Community Safety Policing Act. This position will contribute to the policing community by providing appropriate, well researched legal advice and by acting in a consultative capacity to the Toronto Police Service. Key Qualifications Must not have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been obtained. If a pardon was obtained, proof of pardon must be provided. If a conditional or absolute discharge has been received, proof that the RCMP has sealed the records must be provided. Must have conformed, presently conform, and continue to conform to the Core Values of the Service. A J.D. or LL.B. degree from a recognized law school combined with successful completion of the bar examination and the mandatory period of articling. Minimum of four (4) years experience as a practicing lawyer since being called to the Bar. Must have litigation experience in a law office or a law department. Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario. In-depth legal knowledge in reviewing and providing advice on legal agreements including licensing agreements. Knowledge of matters of administrative law. Must have demonstrated well-developed written and oral advocacy skills. Proficiency in drafting legal submissions and a high level of competency in persuasive legal writing is critical. Ability to effectively represent the Service when dealing with all levels of government, courts and tribunal, the Service and the public, is essential.
