Avia NG recently expanded its range of services with the formation of a designated division for Planning and Advisory.The Aviation Planning and Advisory division focuses on providing planning for airport and heliport infrastructure projects and related services including but not limited to master planning, land use planning, terminal and facility planning, feasibility studies, cost-benefit analysis, airfield capacity evaluation, regulatory compliance, and operations advisory. In addition, our team offers services in aeronautical impact assessments, zoning regulation, aircraft noise modeling, and site development planning.What does a typical day look like for a Planning & Design Technician?As a Planning and Design Technician, you will play a pivotal role in supporting our aviation consultancy projects by utilizing your expertise in GIS, CAD, LiDAR, and Civil 3D to create detailed geographical designs and maps. You will work closely with engineers, planners, and designers to produce high-quality visualizations and support data-driven decision-making. Your creative and technical skills will help simplify complex data and translate it into actionable insights for our clients, with a focus on aviation, municipal planning, and regulatory compliance.Collect, analyze, and interpret geographical data using GIS software to create accurate and efficient maps and spatial models relevant to aviation and municipal planning projects.Produce high-quality design drawings using CAD software and Civil 3D for aviation infrastructure, airport planning, and site layout projects.Work with Lidar data to produce topographic maps, 3D models, and other geographic visualizations for use in aviation and municipal projects.Create clean, readable, and visually appealing geographic typography maps. Simplify complex geographic data to make it easy to understand and communicate to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.Utilize knowledge of municipal planning principles and zoning by-laws to ensure designs are compliant with local regulations and planning standards.Present design concepts and GIS findings to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities. Prepare reports and documentation as needed.Collaborate with other design professionals, engineers, and planners to ensure that GIS designs and visualizations meet project goals and requirements.Ensure accuracy and precision in all GIS outputs and design work. Conduct regular quality checks on data and designs to meet internal standards and client expectations.What do we need from you? Our best fit for this role is an individual who prides themselves as a master of time management and multi-tasking. They possess excellent communication skills and are able to take initiative independently.Skills and experience we are seeking:College or University degree in GIS, Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering, or a related field.Previous experience working in GIS tools and design software, preferably within the aviation, municipal planning, or infrastructure sectors.Experience in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ESRI/Q-GIS software. Experience with additional software, such as Sketchup, is considered an asset.Knowledge of LiDAR data processing and the ability to work with point cloud data.Proficiency in GIS software.Strong understanding of design principles and ability to create visualizations that clearly communicate complex geographic data.Experience with graphic design tools.Strong understanding of zoning, land-use regulations, and municipal planning processes, with the ability to navigate and interpret local by-laws for design compliance.Excellent attention to detail and the ability to solve complex spatial problems creatively and efficiently.Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to present complex data and designs clearly to clients and team members.Experience with 3D modeling and rendering software.Familiarity with aviation design principles and regulations is a plus.This position may require periodic but limited travel within Canada and internationally.
