The Hamilton General supports community hospital services and specialized in Cardiac, Vascular, Neuro Surgery and Adult Burns and Trauma. The operating room at McMaster hospital provides support to a high volume of care to critical/ acute adult, pediatric and neonatal surgical populations.Position SummaryUnder the direction of the surgeon, the Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring Technologist will possess the background knowledge for both theory and practice as well as experience and critical thinking skills to independently perform diagnostic procedures during central and peripheral neurological surgeries to help to anatomically identify physiological changes during surgery. Intraoperative neurophysiological tests may include, but are not limited to: SSEP, MEP, EMG, EEG AND BAEP. The primary goal is to assist in preserving neurological function during surgery and preventing untoward deficits. To this end, the technologist jointly performs monitoring procedures during surgery and promptly notifies the surgical team should there be any changes in the neurophysiological monitoring parameters. Participates in conferences and technical meetings is essential. The technologist will establish further training and monitoring procedures.Schedule Work HoursThis position is full time, Monday to Friday, Days and Evenings, at times there will be additional on-call requirementsQualifications1. Bachelor of science degree2. Successful graduate of an accredited intraoperative neuro-monitoring educational program3. Current and in good standing Certified Neurophysiological Intraoperative monitoring (CNIM)4. Professional membership with CANM (Canadian Association of Intraoperative Monitoring)5. The ability and initiative to self-teach is essential6. The technologist will possess the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing7. Excellent interpersonal skills are required8. The technologist has to be able to function and navigate effectively in fast-paced Operating Room environment9. The technologist must be able to wear lead10.The candidate should have demonstrated interpersonal, communication and leadership skills that enhance team functioning11.
