The Global Hedging Variable and Indexed-Linked Products (GHVILP) team at Manulife Financial is seeking a Director to lead the Modelling Team, responsible for managing and enhancing our hedging programs for variable and indexed-linked products. About The Team The Global Hedging - Variable and Indexed-Linked Products (GHVILP) team is part of the Global Asset Liability Management function within the General Account Investments. The team is responsible for establishing and managing global hedging programs at Manulife Financial. The program currently manages both the companys balance sheet equity risk through the Macro program and the market risks associated with variable annuity (VA) and indexed universal life (IUL) products. About The Role As Director and team lead, you will play a pivotal leadership role in guiding a team of actuaries and quantitative analysts. You will be responsible for driving the modelling strategy, mentoring team members, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality actuarial insights that support our hedging programs. This high-impact role offers significant exposure to senior leadership and cross-functional teams, blending technical depth with strategic influence. You will also gain deep expertise in product design, hedging strategies, financial reporting, capital management, and modelling, while expanding your knowledge of financial derivatives and the broader capital markets. Key Responsibilities Lead and mentor grow a team of actuarial and quantitative professionals within the Modelling Team. Oversee daily hedging actuarial operations for a large derivatives portfolio, ensuring alignment with market risk exposures and IFRS17 standards. Conduct actuarial analysis of fair market value liabilities and sensitivities to market-based risk factors. Evaluate hedging performance and provide actionable insights to inform strategic decisions. Collaborate with ALM, Finance, Capital, Risk, and Strategy teams to support and expand hedging initiatives across insurance products. Monitor and assess emerging trends (e.g., regulatory changes, market liquidity, new tradable assets) to enhance the hedging framework. Identify and evaluate hedging related capital optimization opportunities. Serve as a key subject matter expert on dynamic hedging, engaging with stakeholders across the organization. Enhance and maintain in-house hedging systems, including model calibration, Python scripting, and PathWise integration. Lead and implement new hedging initiatives in partnership with Technology and business teams. Support stress testing, reporting, and timely responses to senior management inquiries. Qualifications Actuarial designation (FSA, FCIA, ASA) with 5+ years of relevant experience in roles of progressive responsibility OR strong background in finance or quantitative disciplines. Proven leadership experience in a technical or actuarial capacity. Deep understanding of hedging, derivatives, and market risk management. Proficiency in Python and actuarial modeling tools (e.g., PathWise). Results oriented, able to manage expectations, work under tight deadlines and manage competing priorities. Demonstrates advanced knowledge regarding technical aspects of work. Able to review data or results for reasonability and identify root causes and drivers of results. Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across diverse teams. Strong business acumen with ability to communicate complex actuarial concepts and results in a clear, concise, easy to understand manner.
