Job Description

Reports To: Vice President, Financial Services Reporting to the Vice President, Financial Services, the Financial Controller is responsible for the daily operations of the Accounting and Accounts Payable Department. This position has three direct and eight indirect reports responsible for recording, reconciling and reporting the financial activities of the Activa Group of Companies. The Financial Controller provides technical expertise and mentorship to the Accounting and Accounts Payable team through leadership, problem solving and technical advice. The Financial Controller will lead the department in ensuring the companys business activities are accurately reported in a timely manner and in accordance with company policies and procedures, generally accepted accounting procedures, and Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises. The Financial Controller is also responsible for ensuring compliance with the Income Tax Act. This role is an integral part of the Financial Services Leadership Team required to meet Activas accounting and financial reporting objectives. Key Responsibilities Leadership and Oversight Lead, motivate, and develop the Accounts Payable, General Ledger Accounting, and Inventory Accounting teams through 3 manager direct reports Set departmental goals, and ensure accountability for achieving those goals within each functional area Provide oversight of all accounting functions, including process improvement initiatives, and providing insights into other projects across the company with a focus on internal controls and efficiencies Foster a high-performing, collaborative, and continuous improvement culture across the team Strategic Support Partner with other departments and business units across the company to support decision-making and business initiatives Provide fact-based analytics and recommendations for internal business partners and to positively influence business decisions Support ERP optimization efforts and integration of financial data across systems and business lines Provide oversight and coordination of overhead and annual forecast budgeting Responsible for the complete and accurate reporting of monthly/quarterly/annual results including overseeing the preparation of internal reports and financial statements Provide insights and analysis on financial performance, variances, and key trends to senior leaders Ensure financial reporting complies with applicable accounting standards (ASPE) and Income Tax Act rules and guidelines Operational Finance Support the weekly payment process through oversight and coordination with Accounts Payable, ensuring we meet our contractual payment obligations with trade partners, consultants and suppliers Manage banking administration, including user access, account structures and treasury controls Tax and Compliance Corporate income tax return review and approval for all legal entities in the Activa group of companies Responsible for corporate tax provisions and Canada Revenue Agency correspondence including tax and compliance audits Ensuring compliance with HST reporting and remittance requirements Responsibility over tax, legal, and industry compliance with the support of our consultants and internal business partners Coordination with external auditors for annual financial statement audit Requirements CPA designation with an undergrad degree in accounting Minimum 5 years experience in a supervisory role Exposure to owner-managed businesses would be an asset Demonstrated leadership skills in a diverse team setting Above average ability to work on numerous projects/tasks simultaneously; and prioritize effectively Demonstrated skills to develop a team with a high level of engagement as well as coach and develop team members Proven ability to meet deadlines Demonstrated ability to implement new ideas using an entrepreneurial spirit Proven ability to apply accounting policy/theory to practical experiences Excellent written and verbal communications skills Proficient in Microsoft Office with a particularly strong aptitude in MS Excel Experience with a large ERP system such as D365 Personal Attributes Professional, motivated, and enthusiastic Embodies the companys core values of respect, innovation, teamwork and excellence.
