Classification: Justice Role Responsibilities The Alberta Court of Justice and Alberta Justice welcome the interest of qualified lawyers who wish to be considered for appointment as a full-time or part-time Justice of the Peace. Applications are being sought for various locations across the province on an on-going basis. Applicants must be a Canadian citizen and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta, with a minimum of five years of related experience at the Bar. To be considered eligible, applicants must go through a screening process and be recommended for appointment by the Judicial Council and the Alberta Judicial Nominating Committee. Applicants will be considered on the basis of criteria such as integrity, professional excellence, community and social awareness, cultural sensitivity, and personal suitability. Appointments are for a ten-year term. Restrictions on other Employment Successful full-time applicants, unless otherwise authorized by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, will not be able to practice law. Successful part-time applicants will not be able to practice criminal law or family law, appear as counsel on any matters in the Alberta Court of Justice, represent any client in any proceeding involving the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada, or represent the Government of Alberta or the Government of Canada in any proceeding. Notes Remuneration for full-time Justice of the Peace has increased to $175,588 per year effective December 2024. The per diem rate for part-time and ad hoc Justice of the Peace has increased to $1109 effective December 2024. The shift differential rates effective December 2024 are: Shift 2024/25 weekday evening shift 59.88 weekday night shift 148.67 weekend day shift 59.87 weekend evening shift 91.01 weekend night shift 208.54 holiday day shift 91.01 holiday evening shift 119.75 holiday night shift 268.42 Shift work is a requirement of these positions Interview and relocation expenses will not be granted This competition will be used to fill current and future vacancies Applicants for these positions will be asked to undergo a security screening Submitting a resume through the government job board will not be accepted.
