Job Summary: The Pre-Production Technical Director supports creative and visual objectives through pipeline troubleshooting, user support, technical direction, and tool development for front-end craft groups, including Story, Edit, Art, Concept, Design, and Visual Development. They bring deep understanding of processes, technology, and tools within these domains, contributing to the design and development of artist workflows and tools to ensure efficient pre-production processes integrated with the overall pipeline. What Youll Do: Technical Responsibilities: Understand visual requirements and suggest new technologies or design procedures to meet them. Provide technical expertise and guidance for all Pre-Production technology. Contribute to the evolution and maintenance of Pre-Production technology. Design, develop, and maintain high-quality code. Resolve complex technical issues in collaboration with other TDs and Software Engineers. Work with other TDs to drive technical success of development initiatives. Ensure tools, technology, and procedures support the creative process. Provide solutions to visual problems using existing or new tools. Optimize Pre-Production tools, workflows, and software. Drive QA, testing, and validation of new technology and pipeline changes. Understand adjoining departments'' processes to maximize pipeline efficiency and quality. Participate in brainstorming and problem-solving to maintain technology within the production pipeline. Support overall technical goals of the organization. Bidding & Scheduling Responsibilities: Manage development initiatives within deadlines. Monitor scope of technical projects and adjust estimates as needed. Break down projects into organized tasks. Assist in preparing estimates and pitches with the Supervising TD. Talent & Performance Management Responsibilities: Provide technical guidance and escalate issues as needed. Help develop skills of mid-level TDs. Mentor team members and assist in onboarding new starters. Promote efficiency and innovation across work groups. Communication & Collaboration Responsibilities: Communicate technical ideas and project status clearly. Coordinate with Program Managers on scheduling. Discuss complex issues with engineers and supervisors. Present to small teams on demos and processes. Write clear specifications and updates. What Youll Need: Education in software engineering or film creation. 5+ years pipeline TD experience in large-scale animation or VFX. Proven achievements in feature animation or VFX. Understanding of traditional techniques for Pre-Production. Experience with relevant software (e.g., Flix, Avid, Storyboard Pro, Photoshop). Deep technical knowledge of Pre-Production processes. Ability to review code and troubleshoot. Expertise in Python and GUI toolkits like PyQt. Knowledge of data flow, dependencies, and metadata. Solid understanding of C++ and USD concepts is a plus. Familiarity with Flow Production Tracking (ShotGrid). Experience with version control (git, GitHub) and Agile practices (Jira). Degree in relevant fields or equivalent experience. This role is based in Vancouver, BC. Hybrid role (minimum 3 days in-office). Compensation ranges from $105,000 to $185,000 CAD, based on various factors.
