OverviewAssistant Professor - African and Caribbean Francophone Literature. The Department of French in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in African and/or Caribbean Francophone Literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.The Department seeks candidates who hold a PhD in Francophone Studies or a related French Studies specialization (Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies, or Digital Humanities) with expertise in one or more of the following areas: French-speaking North Africa, Sub-Saharan French-speaking countries, French-speaking Caribbean, or the Black Francophone diaspora of the Americas. Native or near-native fluency in French and strong command of English are expected.ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will contribute to teaching and research at the graduate and undergraduate levels. They willconduct innovative research leading to high-impact publications and externally funded programs;teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including graduate supervision;develop and maintain an active research program that strengthens the department's strengths and interdisciplinary collaborations with centers such as the Center for African Studies, the Center for Caribbean Studies, or the Center for Diaspora and Transnational Studies;provide mentorship and supervision to graduate students;participate in committee work and service within the department and university; andengage with the broader scholarly and local communities to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in teaching and research.QualificationsPhD in Francophone Studies or a related field (Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies, or Digital Humanities) with research focus in African and/or Caribbean Francophone literature.Native or near-native fluency in French and strong command of English.Evidence of research excellence demonstrated by a sustained record of high-impact contributions (e.g., monographs, articles in top journals, conference presentations, awards), with the ability to sustain and lead innovative, independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an externally funded program.Evidence of excellence in teaching, including a thorough teaching dossier with a teaching statement, sample syllabi for 100/200-level courses, teaching evaluations, and strong letters of reference.Ability to collaborate across graduate units and centers, and to teach and supervise graduate students within the tri-campus graduate unit of the French Department.Salary and AppointmentSalary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
