Overview Assistant Professor Religions of Transnational East Asia. The Department for the Study of Religion and the Department of East Asian Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Religions of Transnational East Asia. This will be a joint appointment between the Department for the Study of Religion (60%) and the Department of East Asian Studies (40%). The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. Qualifications and Focus Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in the Study of Religion, East Asian Studies or a related discipline by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our departmental strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program, and teach courses in both departments. We seek scholars whose work engages with the historical and/or contemporary processes of the making and unmaking of religion in transnational East Asia, broadly defined. Both the Study of Religion and East Asian studies are interdisciplinary and multi-methodological departments that center questions of theory and method in research and teaching. Evidence of Excellence Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence through publications in top-ranked journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, conference presentations, awards, and strong endorsements. Language proficiency is expected in the specialized area of research. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, and strong letters of reference.
