Overview The Senior Engineer, Substations provides technical leadership, expert advice, guidance, mentorship, and oversight to all Substation Engineering related projects. They ensure the Substations Engineering Team delivers high-quality design packages to customers or project teams on schedule, and they resolve design-related issues and field questions while projects are underway. They are responsible for the accuracy, quality, and constructability of designs, calculations, and estimates for substation projects of all sizes. They contribute to substation bid proposals, estimates, material calculations, and are accountable for the accuracy of quoted work. Effective collaboration and communication with multiple internal and external stakeholders is required to progress designs through all project stages. The Senior Engineer, Substations works closely with project management to ensure all design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time. Responsibilities Provide technical leadership and oversight for Substation Engineering projects from concept to completion. Ensure handover of high-quality design packages to customers or project teams on schedule; resolve design-related issues and field questions during execution. Ensure accuracy, quality, and constructability of designs, calculations, and estimates for substation projects of all sizes. Contribute to substation bid proposals, estimates, and material calculations; ensure accuracy of quoted work. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to progress designs through all project stages. Work with project management to ensure design/build projects are profitable and delivered on time. Mentor and develop the Substation Engineering group; foster career development of engineers and technologists. Provide technical expertise and support professional development within the group. Support management of engineering scopes performed by third-party partners. Prepare and deliver job descriptions and performance evaluations for direct reports. Oversee reporting of KPIs such as utilization, profitability, and backlog. Develop short and long-term staffing plans with operational managers. Support business development by attending client meetings and pursuing repeat business. Support proposal development and ensure timely responses to operational proposals. Mentor, coach, and train team members within the substation design group. Provide oversight and checking of the entire substation design package including apparatus, protection & control, and SCADA. Monitor design budgets and assist project managers in defending engineering scope changes to clients. Maintain a safe working environment and ensure team safety. Maintain relationships with customers, consultants, and design approvers. Qualifications A Bachelors Degree in Engineering Registration as a P. Eng with APEGA 8+ years in an electrical engineering environment with extensive design, cost estimating, and project management experience in utility-specific substation design Understanding of substation design and studies for Windfarms, Solar Farms, and BESS solutions is a plus Familiarity with protection and control, maintenance, and operational practices is an asset Skills Advanced experience in managing a program of work with multiple proposals, estimates, and designs simultaneously Ability to provide engineering support for the full project lifecycle Subject matter expert in high voltage design, construction, electrical codes, standards, and specifications Strong mentorship and leadership skills Coaching and professional development skills to build team capacity Commitment to continuous improvement within the team Ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining detail Capability to resolve complex issues promptly Ability to build relationships with clients, consultants, approval authorities, and utility representatives Other Must have a valid Class 5 drivers license Strong written and verbal communication skills Position requires a mix of office and field work #J-18808-Ljbffr
