Overview Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Identity Foundations) Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest. Identity Engineering owns the systems responsible for onboarding all consumers and managing their authentication and verification journeys across Affirms product surfaces. You will gain a deep understanding of the business, product and engineering context, and use that context to own and deliver high-availability and low-latency systems on the critical paths for all products. What Youll Do Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, lead engineers through ambiguity to solve open-ended problems, and ensure support throughout delivery. Collaborate with product management, design & analytics during ideation, articulate technical constraints, and partner on decisions that consider risks and trade-offs. Proactively identify project, process, technology or business issues, advocate for them, and lead in solving them. Support operations and availability of team artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting on-call efforts. Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting or improving code review and design standards, and advocating for them beyond the team through writing and tech talks. Develop talent on the team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example. What We Look For 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin. Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes. Experience defining a technical plan for delivering significant features or system components with a simple, elegant and extensible design. Writes high-quality code that is easily understood and used by others. Proficiency in making significant changes in a large code base and developing tools and practices to enable safe changes. Ownership of growth, proactively seeking feedback from team, manager, and stakeholders. Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team. Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelors degree in a related field. Pay, Equity & Benefits Pay Grade - N Equity Grade - 6 Base pay is part of a total compensation package that may include equity rewards, stipends for health, wellness and tech spending, and benefits (including 100% subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision for you and your dependents). CAN base pay range per year: $150,000 - $200,000 Location: Remote Canada Affirm is a remote-first company. Most roles are remote; some may require occasional office work. A limited number of roles remain office-based due to job responsibilities.
