Job Description

Overview Lead Electrical Engineer role at GHD , based in Waterloo and/or GTA . Part of the Engineering Design Organization (EDO) with a multidisciplinary design team working on electrical aspects for projects including new installations, upgrades, testing, commissioning, and construction support. The candidate should have a solid understanding of low and medium voltage power distribution design, motor control concepts, electrical system protection and control, standby power options and implementation, detailed design work, construction contract administration and commissioning for water and wastewater treatment plants, industrial plants, solid waste and non-utility power generation plants in municipal and industrial sectors. Adaptability to different client design standards, experience with pursuits, mentoring junior staff, developing team standards, and managing client relationships are essential. Responsibilities Needs Assessment: Identify emerging issues or needs, causes, barriers, stakeholders, and conduct condition assessments and client workshops to align solutions with client needs. Improvement/Innovation: Identify shortcomings in practices, propose improvements, lead value engineering activities, present design options, and make technical decisions. Culture of Innovation: Drive crossfunctional collaboration and innovative electrical solutions across multiple projects in fast-paced environments. Engineering Solutions Design: Design electrical solutions and validation to meet functional, performance, and cost targets; prepare detailed design drawings for LV/MV power distribution, motor control, standby power, fire alarm and security, grounding, instrumentation and control, and building services. Engineering Standards Specification: Develop and implement electrical standards, lead technical guidance for senior and intermediate engineers. Process Design Engineering: Specify methods and steps for processes; perform electrical design calculations and studies (short circuit, arc flash, harmonics, GPR). Knowledge Management: Develop policies, share knowledge, provide technical review and quality control of documents. Installation Monitoring and Control: Translate policies into action plans; support tendering and construction with RFIs, shop drawings, reports, site inspections, testing plans, and project meetings. Technical Developments Recommendation: Propose complex/innovative developments; coordinate designs with other disciplines, vendors, and external teams. Professional Supervision: Lead and mentor electrical staff; manage project teams, schedule, quality, and budgets. Feasibility Studies: Conduct feasibility studies, document findings, and contribute to proposals and reporting for business development. Project Management: Manage a portfolio of projects; act as Project Lead on large projects delivering designs, documentation, BOMs, scope of work, and construction support. Client & Customer Management: Manage client relationships; assist in business development and ensure compliance with Canadian electrical codes and industry standards. Education B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering Registered member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario Experience General: 20+ years in design and implementation of MV and LV electrical systems with strong field instrumentation understanding. Managerial: Experience supervising electrical teams, leading technical development, managing client relations, scope changes, schedule, and budgets on complex projects. Canadian codes and standards: Excellent knowledge of relevant electrical codes; understanding of MV/LV design concepts, safety, protection theories. Skills: Strong analytical abilities, detail-oriented, sound judgment, self-motivated, organized, multi-tasking in fast-paced environments with strong communication. Collaboration: Experience working with municipal clients on water/wastewater projects; assets in industrial projects and with City of Toronto/York Region projects; P.Eng. in provinces other than Ontario and PMP designation are assets; valid G class drivers license.
