Job Description Job Summary The Associate Patrol Director will work seamlessly with the Patrol Director to coordinate and supervise all daily patrol operations including: guest safety, the snow safety program, patrol training in first aid and technical rescue, volunteer ski patrol, risk management, budgeting and biweekly payroll. As a team, they will work with management to pursue resort-oriented goals. The development and maintenance of departmental policies and procedures will be the focus of early and late season work. The Assistant Patrol Director will work four 10-hour days to ensure supervisory coverage during the operating season. Departmental hiring, supervising, and discipline as per REDs Discipline Policy will be part of the responsibilities shared with the Patrol Director. Management and Administrative Duties In partnership with the Patrol Director, take a lead role in the department management including team building and motivation, fostering a supportive and respectful culture and following disciplinary procedures. Manage department scheduling and bi-weekly payroll review and submission. Liaise closely with the Outdoor Operations department to build effective working relationships and facilitate cross departmental collaboration. Perform risk assessments for all Patrol functions and review on a regular basis. Provide support in developing and maintaining all department procedures. Identify and develop any additional policies and procedures to be created. Participate in risk management activities and identify areas for improvement. Lead the CISM team. Mountain Duties Coordinate and supervise all daily Patrol and Dispatch operations in partnership on the Patrol Directors days off. Perform all duties of an experienced lead patroller. Supervise Volunteer Patrol and assist the Volunteer Patrol Coordinator with training as required. Provide training to other RED departments as required. Assist Patrol Director with patrol requirements for special events and competitions. Perform the role of Lift Evacuation Coordinator or Avalanche Rescue Coordinator roles when needed Perform accident investigations, including the thorough and accurate documentation of incidents. Snow Safety Participate in the Snow Safety Program, working closely with the Avalanche Forecasting Coordinator. Implement and deliver pre season staff training, working closely with the Avalanche Forecasting Coordinator. Participate in the annual Renewal of Magazine Licenses and related Policy review in collaboration with the Patrol Director. Qualifications Extensive experience as a Patroller with considerable knowledge of big mountain operations. Minimum 5 years full time seasonal avalanche control with explosives experience. Supervisory experience within the context of the Mountain Safety Industry ex. snow safety lead or patrol team lead roles. Must be physically fit, able to lift 25kgs and perform all duties of a Patroller on skis. This position requires a candidate to ski at a professional level. Ability to think critically during high stress events. Proven team management skills and ability to motivate employees. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to work effectively with others. A WorkSafe BC Blasters Ticket for Avalanche Control Hand Charging with Safety Fuse Assembly endorsement, or the equivalent out of jurisdiction ticket. Either a Screening Letter for Access to High Explosives from the Explosives Regulatory Department, Canada or a Possession and Acquisition License Canadian Avalanche Association Level 1 for Operations. Canadian Avalanche Association Level 2 for Operations would be considered an asset. Hold a valid 80 hour minimum first aid certificate. Peaks Non-Urban Emergency Care Ticket is preferred but WSBC OFA3 is acceptable Have a strong understanding of the emotional toll emergency medicine and mountain rescue can leave and provide constructive techniques to manage it for both the teams and your own personal mental health.
