Overview Position: Freelance Interpreter (English/Burmese) Organization: MCIS Language Solutions As a freelance interpreter with MCIS Language Solutions, you will provide interpretation in settings such as hospitals, police stations, tribunal hearings, schools, and more. Your primary role is to facilitate accurate communication between English and Burmese speakers, ensuring access to services for individuals with limited language proficiency. Base pay range CA$20.00/hr - CA$25.00/hr Key Responsibilities Interpretation: Provide accurate, clear, and professional interpretation between English and Burmese in community settings, including healthcare and legal environments. Cultural Sensitivity: Demonstrate cultural awareness to faithfully convey meaning and tone while respecting cultural nuances. Reading and Oral Translation: Read and orally translate written materials as needed, for example forms, medical records, or legal documents. Facilitating Access to Services: Help vulnerable populations navigate healthcare, law enforcement, and social services by breaking down linguistic barriers. Travel: Travel to assignment locations as required; access to assignments via car, public transport, or other means. Remote Assignments: Handle over-the-phone or video interpretation assignments when applicable. Professionalism and Confidentiality: Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in sensitive contexts. Requirements Fluency in English and Burmese (written and spoken) is required. Reading Proficiency: Ability to read and interpret written documents and translate into clear oral communication. Soft Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, patience, and a commitment to service. Transportation: Ability to travel to different locations; reliable transportation needed. Legal Eligibility: Must be legally entitled to work in Canada. Training And Support Training: MCIS provides a free online training module to prepare you for assignments; completion prior to starting work is required. Experienced Interpreters: Applications from experienced interpreters who have been tested and certified in community interpreting are welcome.
