Overview As a member of the military, Cyber Operators conduct defensive cyber operations and, when required and feasible, active cyber operations. They collaborate with other government departments, agencies, and allies to enhance the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) ability to maintain a secure cyber environment. Responsibilities include monitoring CAF communication networks to detect and respond to unauthorized access attempts and providing cyber support for Navy, Army, Air Force, and joint operations. A Cyber Operator has the following responsibilities: Collect, process, and analyze network data Identify network vulnerabilities Manage a computer network environment Conduct defensive and active cyber operations Apply security and communications knowledge in IT Maintain classified and unclassified records and publications Work environment Cyber Operators work with sensitive information in high-security environments, often in restricted-access facilities. They work shift work but also have opportunities for regular business hours. They serve in sea, land, air environments, and on deployed operations worldwide. Opportunities for exchange programs with allied nations are available. Joining the Regular Force involves assignment to a base after training, with potential relocations. The Primary Reserve Force involves part-time service with a specific Reserve unit, typically one night per week and some weekends, with possibilities for full-time employment. Entry requirements Minimum education: High school diploma or equivalent, including Math and Computer Studies or Programming. Alternative pathways include specialized skills or current enrollment in a cybersecurity college program. Contact for eligibility questions. Future plans include accepting applications from completed CAF-endorsed college programs. Training begins with Basic Military Qualification, followed by college programs on network security, and further specialized training at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics (CFSCE). Opportunities for advanced training and career progression are available. Part-time options Available within the Primary Reserve at various locations. Reserve members serve part-time, with training at their local units, and may volunteer for deployments. They receive pay and benefits comparable to the Regular Force.
