Overview Child Life Specialist (BA) - Surrey Memorial Hospital Fraser Health Authority The salary range for this position is CAD $37.89 - $47.31 / hour. Under the direction of the Manager, Clinical Operations, this role plans, initiates and monitors daily activities to support the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of children and adolescents on an assigned unit. It promotes understanding of medical events and procedures for parents and children, liaises with the interdisciplinary team, and participates in the development of policies and procedures related to the program. Responsibilities Plan, initiate and monitor activities for children and adolescents to support development, selecting developmentally appropriate toys, books, equipment and activities; adapt play to suit individual needs and medical contexts. Liaise with interdisciplinary team (e.g., physiotherapy and occupational therapy) to ensure treatment plans are reinforced during play and treatment plan changes are communicated as appropriate. Observe, record and report information on patients' behaviour and development; maintain charts and communicate findings to the team. Chart workload statistics on direct and non-direct patient care in line with department and professional standards. Provide education to patients and parents; develop and implement orientation programs; participate in departmental, hospital and regional educational programs. Coordinate and allocate work to volunteers assigned to the area. Participate in program and professional committees and contribute to policy development. Interpret the program to hospital-based students and related fields, providing supervised work experience and guidance as requested. Organize visits by community groups and special entertainers; maintain program equipment and supplies; manage maintenance and supply levels. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in a related field such as Child and Youth Care, Child Development, Psychology, Special Education or Family Studies. One (1) year of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Eligible for membership with Child Life Council or the Canadian Association of Child Life Leaders. Completion of Child Life Certification. Skills and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others within and outside the organization. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a changing environment and take initiative to ensure timely delivery of services. Ability to operate related equipment; ability to relate to children, adolescents and families. Knowledge of medical procedures and terminology; ability to modify activities and materials to meet individual needs. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
