Job Description

Overview Our Construction Phase Services group, located in Markham, Whitby, Toronto and Mississauga offices, is looking for a Municipal Building Inspector to perform inspection duties on property restoration projects in Port Hope, Ontario, including residential, commercial and municipally owned land. The ideal candidate will reside within 60 km of Port Hope, Ontario. Responsibilities Working safely and in conformance with GHD's Behaviour-Based Safety culture. Completing day-to-day inspections of Municipal/Residential Building projects in accordance with client terms of reference and manuals. Daily completion of project records / diary entries. Monitoring contractor work for compliance with project design and specifications. Monitoring contractor work for compliance with applicable safety and environmental legislation. Taking action, in consultation with client and in accordance with contract requirements, when non-conformances are observed. Making recommendations / proposing solutions for emerging project issues. Work environment is fast-paced and requires significant collaboration between client/constructor and engineering team. Working overtime hours as necessary, up to 50 hours per week. Work is seasonal in nature and will likely involve greater hours of work in summer than in winter months. Coordinating engineering team project support. Mentoring junior staff. Other duties as may be assigned. External Communications: Help others get the most out of external communications systems by offering support and advice. Construction Management: Supervise others on a construction project, working within established operational systems. Health, Safety, and Environment: Follow the organization's health, safety, and environment (HSE) policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions to identify and mitigate environmental risks and risks to the well-being of self and others in the workplace; instruct the team in safe working methods; identify instances of risky behaviors within the team and take appropriate action, escalating serious issues as appropriate. Work Scheduling and Allocation: Assign short-term work schedules to a team of subordinates in order to achieve expectations while following established timelines. Leadership and Direction: Communicate the local action plan; explain how this relates to the function's strategy and action plan and to the broader organization's mission and vision; motivate people to achieve local business goals. Performance Management: Respond to personal objectives and use performance management systems to improve personal performance; or monitor the performance of the team, allocate work and review completion, take appropriate corrective action to ensure timeliness and quality, and contribute to formal individual performance management and appraisal. Organizational Capability Building: Provide coaching to team members to develop their skills. Operational Compliance: Identify, within the team, instances of noncompliance with the organization's policies and procedures and/or relevant regulatory codes and codes of conduct, reporting these instances and escalating issues as appropriate. Quality Assurance: Plan and coordinate testing and inspection of products and processes. Implement corrective actions or continuous improvement initiatives and monitor them to make sure they are effective. Qualifications Minimum 5 years' experience; Knowledge of Ontario Building Code; A college diploma or university degree in construction, civil engineering or architectural technology OACETT designation, or PEO designation, or Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) for residential construction considered an asset; Past experience as a building inspector is considered an asset; Sound judgment and decisiveness; Client focused; willing to reprioritize tasks to assist client in solving problems related to cost and schedule; Valid Ontario Class 'G' driver's licence; Team player, cooperative with other staff with open sharing of information and knowledge.
