Position Summary Reporting to the Director of Health, Safety & Wellness, The Crisis Prevention & Intervention Program Lead exists to ensure staff are prepared to effectively and safely respond to behavioral emergencies and high-stress situations involving patients. The job is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating training programs that teach de-escalation techniques, non-violent crisis intervention, GPA and safe restraint methods, in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards. The goal is to enhance safety, reduce harm, and support a therapeutic environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Primary Responsibilities In-Person Crisis Intervention Training Deliver regular crisis intervention, de-escalation, and GPA training sessions for all levels of hospital staff, including clinical, security, and support teams. Conduct onboarding sessions for new hires as a mandatory component of orientation, ensuring staff can recognize and respond appropriately to escalating patient behaviors. Lead refresher courses and ongoing skill validations to reinforce learning and address evolving challenges in patient care. Facilitate classroom-based education and hands-on practice, including safe restraint techniques, defensive positioning, team interventions, and verbal de-escalation strategies in alignment with hospital policies and behavioral health best practices. Regularly evaluate and update training content to ensure compliance with current legislation, Ministry standards, and internal crisis response policies. Incorporate case studies, video scenarios, and simulation exercises as needed. Staff Coaching and On-the-Spot Support Provide real-time coaching and reinforcement of crisis intervention, de-escalation, and GPA principles during or following behavioral incidents. Observe staff interactions in high-stress situations and offer supportive, non-punitive feedback to build confidence and encourage safe, effective interventions. Demonstrate correct intervention techniques as on-the-spot reminders for proper application. Serve as a resource for staff seeking guidance on applying learned techniques in real-world, high-acuity settings. Review incidents and documentation to evaluate the techniques used, identify areas for improvement, and inform training updates. Promote a culture of psychological safety by encouraging open dialogue, validating staff experiences, and reinforcing a shared commitment to safety and compassionate care. Cross-Department Collaboration Partner with interdisciplinary teamsincluding Nursing, Mental Health, Emergency Services, and Securityto serve as a subject matter expert (SME) in developing cohesive crisis response protocols across departments. Participate in hospital safety committees and workgroups focused on reducing workplace violence, enhancing behavioral emergency response, and advancing trauma-informed care practices. Contribute to policy development and system-wide initiatives that improve staff preparedness, reduce the use of force, and enhance patient and staff safety during crisis events. Collaborate with department leaders to assess specific needs and tailor training for practical relevance within daily workflows. Collect, analyze, and present data to relevant safety committees to support continuous improvement and risk mitigation initiatives. Mandatory Qualifications and Requirements Bachelors degree or three-year diploma in Psychology, Occupational Health & Safety, Human Resources, or Adult Learning (required). Certification or demonstrated training in de-escalation techniques, non-violent crisis intervention, GPA, and safe restraint methods (or willingness to complete). Minimum 35 years experience in a healthcare setting (required). Previous experience in Emergency, Mental Health, Occupational Health & Safety, and/or Adult Learning environments (preferred). Proven ability to facilitate large group discussions, workshops, and meetings. Availability to work weekends and after hours as needed. Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with all levels of staff and management. Excellent critical thinking, decision-making, and time management skills.
