As a Structural Engineer you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of various structures while ensuring these structures are safe, stable, and able to withstand various stresses and loads. This involves using engineering software, conducting calculations, preparing drawings, and collaborating with other professionals. Responsibilities Design and analysis: Developing structural designs, performing calculations for loads, stresses, and materials, and using software for modeling and simulation. Technical documentation: Preparing engineering drawings, specifications, and reports. Construction oversight: Conducting site visits, inspecting construction progress, and ensuring compliance with design specifications and building codes. Collaboration: Working with architects, contractors, and other professionals to develop integrated design solutions. Material selection: Evaluating and recommending appropriate building and construction materials. Code compliance: Ensuring designs and construction meet relevant building codes and regulations. Specific Tasks Calculating loads and stresses: Determining the forces that a structure will need to withstand. Developing and refining models: Using software to simulate structural behavior and identify potential issues. Analyzing the structural integrity of existing buildings: Assessing the stability and safety of existing structures. Preparing reports and recommendations: Documenting findings and providing guidance for maintenance, repairs, or modifications. Supervising construction activities: Ensuring work is carried out according to the design and specifications. Key Skills Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of structural engineering principles, building codes, and design software. Problem-solving: Ability to analyze complex problems and develop effective solutions. Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to collaborate with team members and clients. Project Management: Ability to manage projects, timelines, and budgets. Major Responsibilities Independently perform structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, wood, and masonry structures in accordance with relevant codes and standards. Prepare technical specifications and contribute to project documentation. Prepare structural analysis and calculation reports. Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, project managers, and clients to ensure efficient project execution. Conduct site visits, inspections, and structural assessments to evaluate structures conditions and provide recommendations. Ensure project deliverables meet quality, budget, and schedule expectations with little supervision. Provide technical or operational guidance to less experienced engineers, EITs and technicians. Stay updated on industry codes, regulations, and best practices to ensure high-quality design solutions. Qualifications Bachelors degree in civil engineering; six (6) years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education. Professional Engineer (P.Engg.) designation in Ontario in good standing. Holding security clearance or the ability to obtain secret level security clearance. Preferred Qualifications 6+ years of experience in civil engineering after receiving the P.Engg., including leadership in design delivery. Experience in IPD (Integrated Project Delivery). Experience in structural design of industrial plants, commercial buildings, residential houses and buildings. Proficiency in 3D structural analysis, modeling, and design software including ETABS, STAAD Pro, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA 3D, as well as other computer-aided design tools relevant to this role. Proven expertise in applying all major structural design codes and standards, including NBC, OBC, CSA S16, CSA A23.1, CSA A23.3, CSA S304, CSA O86, AISC 360, ACI 318, etc. Good written and verbal communication skills (English proficiency essential). Ability to recognize and adhere to established deadlines and schedules is a must. Ability to fit into a fast-paced team environment and/or work independently.
