Responsibilities Demonstrates expertise and provides clinical leadership in evidence-informed practice related to critical care/emergency patients; reviews literature, consults with experts, collaborates with the interprofessional team, evaluates clinical practice, and participates on regional and provincial committees related to care for critical care/emergency patients. Role models direct patient care skills to staff and students and provides education at the point of care; coaches, mentors and uses clinical evidence, policy tools, literature and education theory. Performs comprehensive critical care/emergency nursing assessments for patients with complex needs; develops and evaluates care plans, coordinates discharge and referrals to appropriate community resources. Determines education requirements in collaboration with management; completes learning needs assessments. Arranges and/or provides preceptorships and mentorships for staff and students regarding care of critical care patients. Develops and revises education tools/plans based on learner needs and new tools or scope of practice. Plans and schedules education activities and tracks attendance; maintains related statistics. Delivers learner-centered education through coaching, presentations, groups, and lectures. Evaluates effectiveness of education programs and consultations; maintains related reports. Collaborates with practice leaders to provide leadership, consultation and performance support to clinical staff and students. Supports staff to plan and carry out patient/family education about discharge planning, illness prevention and health promotion. Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities; conducts audits and makes recommendations to improve practice. Participates in research and special projects; promotes staff involvement in research activities. Assists the Manager/Director with staff selection input and budget considerations as requested. Assists in assessing and supporting clinical skill and performance related to older adult care; provides coaching to help achieve performance goals. Participates in the development and evaluation of evidence-informed clinical decision support tools and policies. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Three (3) years of recent related clinical experience including one (1) year of education and/or leadership experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Completion of post graduate course work and/or applicable nursing certification. Skills and Abilities Clinical proficiency in applicable nursing specialty. Ability to role model direct care skills, coach, mentor and teach nursing skills that are compliant with current standards of practice and that ensure quality of care. Ability to apply educational theories and evidence to teaching practices. Ability to identify learning needs of individual or groups of staff. Ability to foster effective teaching and learning relationships. Ability to facilitate learning and create effective learning environments. Ability to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders in preparing appropriate learner environments. Ability to develop and utilize appropriate practice assessment tools. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to work independently in an organized and self directed manner. Ability to problem-solve and effectively deal with conflict situations. Ability to conceptualize teaching from a unit to regional focus. Knowledge of research processes and methodology. Ability to operate related equipment. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
