Job Information Job Title: Director, Legal Services - Police Review Commission Job Requisition ID: 76332 Ministry: Public Safety and Emergency Services Location: Edmonton or Calgary Full or Part-Time: Full Time Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week Permanent/Temporary: Permanent Scope: Open Competition Closing Date: October 17, 2025 Classification: Non-Justice Legal Counsel 4 Salary: $8,303.26 to $9,133.06 bi-weekly ($216,715- $238,373/ year) Role Responsibilities Lead the PRC's legal services and oversee the delivery of legal advice, strategic direction to the legal services unit, and legal advice for investigations, alternative dispute resolution, adjudication, and policy development. Manage legal risk, ensure compliance with legal obligations, and coordinate legal functions across the PRC. Oversee the preparation and presentation of legal opinions and advice; guide legal counsel through complex legal matters. Ensure legal guidance aligns with standards and best practices; supervise legal research, document preparation, and legal disclosure processes. Collaborate with external counsel when necessary; support training initiatives to embed legal guidance into daily operations. Contribute to long-term strategic planning and advise on cross-jurisdictional matters involving the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT); support development of new policies and frameworks for evolving oversight needs. Qualifications University degree in Law or a Juris Doctor (JD) with eleven plus (11+) years of assessed legal experience in criminal or administrative law. Active member of the Law Society of Alberta in good standing or eligible for immediate membership. For law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required. Assets (optional) Experience leading others in managerial or supervisory roles. Experience in administrative, public and/or criminal law with specialized expertise in police oversight, procedural fairness, and interpretation of the Police Act or similar legislation. Leadership experience in legislative, legal interpretation and policy development; experience chairing or participating in legal strategy committees; experience delivering legal training. Knowledge of relevant legislation including the Police Act, Access to Information Act, Protection of Privacy Act, Criminal Code and administrative law principles.
