Job Description

Overview Supervisor, Protection & Control and Automation role at Elexicon Energy Inc. This position reports to the Manager, Station & Automation and supervises P&C and automation technicians, overseeing technical aspects of Distribution Automation capital projects and maintenance programs for all facilities. The role includes assisting in ensuring the quality of information provided to the organization, supporting smart grid projects and related initiatives (e.g., communication platform upgrades, microgrid, energy storage, smart grid funding), and aiding the Manager, Stations & Automation in other departmental activities to achieve targets in time and cost. Responsibilities Supervise, coordinate, and be responsible for the departments overall performance to ensure project completion within approved budgets and timelines; monitor, analyze, and adjust performance as required. Provide direct daily technical support, detailed advice, direction, and expertise for the department and other departments as needed. Demonstrate sound technical judgment, problem solving, non-regimented thinking, and application of theory in balanced decision-making for staff instructions. Supervise, coordinate, and review the technical content of project designs and submissions prior to Manager approval. Initiate and supervise departmental operations in line with performance goals, objectives, and targets; encourage staff input. Coordinate work with other groups to minimize customer outages and switching requirements to complete work efficiently. Stay current with industry technology to keep staff updated on applicable developments. Maintain protection, communication/SCADA, and other field automated devices and correspondence with suppliers; oversee maintenance programs for substations. Assist in planning and development of smart grid technology, equipment needs, and specialized tools. Apply policies, procedures, and external standards (e.g., CSA, OSHA, ESA, IHSA, UWPC) in decision making and staff instructions. Ensure safe, quality, and efficient use of resources; ensure tools, equipment, vehicles, and personnel are available to complete activities. Schedule and manage projects within budget; administer and monitor contractors as required. Assist in planning a skilled labour force and necessary transportation and tools. Report on activities, performance, and progress as requested. Be on-call or respond to station/distribution events outside normal hours when needed. Guide project functions throughout the lifecycle for high voltage equipment and P&C systems in substations, generating stations, and field distribution. Design, review, and estimate complex P&C and SCADA system installations and upgrades per standards and guidelines. Review and sign off on P&C, SCADA, and HV equipment quality and accuracy in compliance with Elexicons protocols and Ontario Reg. 22/04. Prepare commissioning documentation and test routines for equipment in initial service or ongoing maintenance. Manage financial expenses for outside services and non-stock materials for maintenance and capital projects. Demonstrate extensive experience with electrical distribution systems and knowledge of protection, control, distribution automation, SCADA, and communications. Experience with industrial control applications (RTUs, PLCs, IEDs) and familiarity with AutoCAD; knowledge of communication systems (radio, fiber, TCP/IP, DNP3.0). Working knowledge of TCP/IP, fiber, Ethernet, and RF communications; ability to use hand tools and testing equipment relevant to the position. Familiarity with ESA, EUSR, and UWPC requirements. Key Skills & Qualifications Proficient in Microsoft Office, general PC literacy, and working knowledge of CAD systems. Strong leadership, organizational, problem-solving, project management, and interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written communication with a commitment to teamwork and collaboration. Proven ability to manage projects. Minimum Requirements 3-year post-secondary diploma in Electrical or Electronics Engineering Technology. Eligible for OACETT designation as a Certified Engineering Technologist (Electrical). MEARIE Journeyperson Sub-Station Electrician Certificate (Preferred). 710 years experience in an electrical utility environment with substations, protection, and automated distribution equipment. Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience. Utility Work Protection Code certification. Valid G Drivers License.
