Position Overview We are seeking a full-time, permanent Intermediate Electrical Substation Engineer with 4 to 9 years of experience in high-voltage substation engineering and Canadian utility projects. This role is ideal for an individual eager to grow technical expertise in equipment specification and yard design, while contributing to complex projects under the guidance of senior engineers. Responsibilities Technical Execution: Support the development of substation design packages, including drawings, calculations, specifications, and bills of materials. Contribute to yard layouts, grounding & lightning protection designs, cable bus/tray routing, and auxiliary AC/DC systems. Prepare draft equipment datasheets for transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, CTs/PTs, CVTs, surge arresters, and grounding systems. Assist in protection and control philosophies, relay selection tables, and metering requirements. Analysis & Studies: Perform engineering studies including short-circuit, arc-flash, protection coordination, grounding analysis, and insulation coordination under senior review. Support load-flow modelling and other utility-required studies. Review vendor drawings and data sheets to ensure compliance with specifications. Project Engagement: Participate in meetings with utilities (Hydro-Qubec, Manitoba Hydro, AESO, SaskPower, BC Hydro) and clients alongside senior engineers. Assist in RFQs, vendor Q&A, and bid evaluations for long-lead equipment. Support design reviews, FATs, and site inspections. Contribute to project deliverables including Class-3 estimates, schedules, and AFE documentation. Work closely with multidisciplinary teams and field personnel to support construction and commissioning. Learn and apply Junos standards, codes, and procedures while seeking continuous improvement. Qualifications Education & Credentials Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (advanced degrees an asset). Professional Engineering Licence (P.Eng.) in Canada. Experience 4 to 9 years of progressive experience in substation engineering. Exposure to HV/MV yard layouts, equipment specification, and grounding design. Experience supporting studies such as short-circuit, arc flash, and protection coordination. Technical Competence Knowledge of substation equipment including transformers, breakers, surge arresters, CT/PT sets, CVTs, and auxiliary systems. Familiarity with grounding design, spill containment, and Canadian substation practices. Understanding of CSA C22.3, IEEE, IEC, ANSI, and utility interconnection standards. Location & Travel Based in Calgary, Alberta, with flexible work arrangements available. Occasional travel across Canada for utility meetings, vendor FATs, and substation site work.
