Overview ERM is seeking an outstanding professional to join our Smithers, BC, Vancouver, BC, Calgary, AB, or Yellowknife, NT office as a Managing Technical Consultant, Terrestrial Ecology to support our Mining and Energy teams. You will act as a terrestrial ecologist in western Canada, with capacity to work in other jurisdictions across Canada, and as a manager and mentor of the teams junior colleagues. The role includes developing proposals, planning and reviewing terrestrial ecosystem and soil mapping projects, supporting baseline data collection, developing effect assessments for vegetation, ecosystems, and soil valued components, wetland classification, delineation and management, field investigations related to vegetation and ecosystems, and mitigation planning for ERM projects in the mining and energy sectors. The successful applicant will have experience with environmental effects assessments and offset/compensation planning under federal and provincial policies. You will lead within the ecosystem team and provide direct oversight to junior colleagues. You will have opportunities to interact with clients and regulators and participate in business development. You will be a member of a large multidisciplinary biodiversity team in Canada and part of an extensive team of global environmental and social experts. Responsibilities Develop and direct terrestrial ecology and soil science field programs primarily in BC, Alberta and Northern Canada. Prepare environmental effect assessments and related management plans in compliance with applicable federal, provincial/territorial requirements. Develop environmental permitting applications for projects in the mining, energy, and infrastructure sectors. Perform project delivery activities such as survey field work, data collection, literature review, technical report writing, and developing client recommendations. Prepare proposals, including scopes and cost estimates, and participate in business development with existing clients and identified leads. Manage multiple projects within client scope, budget and schedule expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables. Communicate with subcontractors, regulatory agents, landowners, Indigenous communities, and clients during field activities. Build strong collaborative relationships with other ERM employees worldwide. Qualifications B.Sc. degree in Sciences, Environmental Engineering or related field; M.Sc. preferred. Designation as a Qualified Professional in Alberta and/or BC, or immediate eligibility. 5+ years of environmental consulting experience; prior experience in government, mining or energy sectors, or First Nation consultation is an asset. Environmental Assessment and permitting experience in BC, Alberta, and Northern Canada. Expertise with Federal, Provincial and Territorial regulations and guidelines pertaining to survey methodologies, environmental assessment, and mitigation planning. Strong upland and wetland plant identification. Knowledge of rare plant and invasive plant survey methodologies following provincial standards, guidelines, and procedures. Understanding of terrestrial ecosystem mapping under provincial systems (e.g., biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification). Understanding of soil surveys and mapping under provincial systems. Experience completing terrestrial ecosystem mapping projects in BC according to provincial standards is an asset. Strong commitment to safety and ability to follow health and safety protocols. Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a demanding work environment. Driver's license required: valid drivers license and/or ability to operate a company vehicle due to frequent travel to client locations across a large geographic area. Compensation and Benefits For the Managing Technical Consultant, Terrestrial Ecology position, an annual base pay range of CAD $93,309 $103,831 is anticipated. Final pay will reflect education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, location, performance, travel, and business needs. This role may be eligible for a bonus; casual and fixed term/flex force employees are not bonus eligible.
