Overview Join to apply for the Manager, Electrical Engineering role at Ultra Maritime Ultra Maritime seeks a Manager Electrical Engineering to lead and develop Electrical/Electronics Engineers in Canada, ensuring the function has the capability and capacity to meet current and future demand. The role is accountable for how Electrical/Electronics Engineering is performed, including resource management, technical excellence, and capability development, in collaboration with Project Managers, Chief Engineers, Design Assurance, and R&D. The manager ensures on-time delivery of high-quality engineering deliverables, drives digitalization, supports innovation, and addresses critical issues impacting system performance or business continuity. Responsibilities Lead and manage a team of engineers, designers, technicians, and technologists within the assigned discipline. Allocate resources to multiple concurrent projects, ensuring the right skill sets are available when needed. Maintain staffing balance to support project priorities while developing core functional discipline technical capabilities. Ensure all staff are fully trained on UM processes and tools. Monitor the technical quality and on-time delivery of all engineering work produced by the function, in collaboration with Project Managers and Project Engineering Lead. Support recruitment, onboarding, training, mentorship, and career growth of team members. Ensure functional department utilization meets or exceeds utilization targets. Foster a high-performance culture that values collaboration, ownership, and continuous learning. Manage KPIs for the function, including defect rates, schedule adherence, design quality, and team utilization, and report trends to leadership and project stakeholders. Technical Oversight & Project Contribution Review and approve outputs such as models, system architectures, schematics, and documentation for compliance with internal and external standards. Dedicate approximately 20% of time to direct project contribution on high-priority technical tasks, design reviews, integration activities, and technical risk resolution. Participate in system and peer reviews to guide technical decisions and ensure design robustness. Review and authorize cost/effort estimates in support of bids, proposals, project planning, and engineering change order development. Quality Improvement & Assurance Track process maturity and gaps, implement new processes to ensure consistent delivery of outputs. Contribute to cross-functional processes and procedures. Launch and manage improvement initiatives to increase quality, consistency, and robustness of engineering outputs. Collaborate with Design Assurance and Quality teams to align processes, mitigate recurring issues, and meet compliance requirements. Promote best practices in engineering execution, including documentation, peer reviews, and validation protocols. Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis Act as the functional lead for critical issue resolution within the engineering domain. Work with the Chief Engineer to investigate, analyze, and resolve complex failures or systemic challenges. Facilitate and lead RCAs, support post-incident corrective actions, and embed lessons learned into future designs and processes. Digitalization & Innovation Drive digital transformation within the department in collaboration with the Chief Engineer and R&D, including model-based engineering, automation tools, simulation frameworks, and digital strategies. Evaluate and introduce technologies that reduce development cycle time, improve design quality, or enhance cross-functional integration. Encourage bottom-up innovation and experimentation to solve technical or operational challenges. Cross-Functional Collaboration Collaborate with Project Managers to align task ownership, schedules, and resourcing in a matrixed environment. Support Supply Chain to ensure manufacturability, parts availability, obsolescence management, and ongoing technical supplier discussions. Support Operations by resolving build issues, improving engineering documentation, and addressing non-conformances. Contribute to lifecycle cost reduction initiatives through technical input and design changes. Function-Specific Focus Areas Establish and maintain an ECAD database and toolset across the Canadian Line of Business. Ensure all analysis tools and models are properly documented and verified/validated; improve test and validation coverage across hardware components. Ensure all Electrical Engineering design work adheres to company processes and policies. Assist with design of analog/digital circuits, PCB layout, testing and evaluation of CCAs. Role Requirements Experience leading multiple medium-size Electrical/Electronics Engineering teams. Detailed knowledge of Electrical/Electronics Engineering aspects, preferably in the defence sector. Experience dealing with a wide range of stakeholders and senior management. Experience across the full project lifecycle, from bids and proposals through to in-service support. Ability to obtain the appropriate Canadian government security clearance and satisfy requirements to work on Canadian Controlled Goods projects. Qualifications/Skills Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or related field. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Broad exposure to electronics skills and tools: analog and digital design, DSP applications, PCB layout, ECAD tools, FPGA design using VHDL, and use of engineering tools (DOORS, UML, ERP, configuration management). Typically, a Bachelor Degree (or equivalent) in a related field and 9+ years of experience within a relevant complex engineering environment and 1+ years leadership experience.
