CNL is seeking a Waste Characterization Specialist for a vacancy in Chalk River, ON. Within CNL, Environmental Engineers are referred to as Waste Characterization Specialists. The purpose of this position is to determine the characterization needs of a facility to undergo decommissioning. Characterization of a facility identifies the radiological and industrial hazards associated with a facility to be decommissioned in order to prepare detailed work plans and identify the required waste paths. What you will be doing! The general accountabilities associated with this position are as follows: Perform historical reviews and gap analyses to determine characterization needs of a facility Perform field walk downs to define scopes of work Prepare characterization documents; scoping survey plans, characterization plans, and sampling work plans using the Integrated Work Control Process Provide input for the development of schedules of characterization activities to align with project milestones set out in the APWB Coordinate and monitor field activities with various service groups: IH, RP, Trades, WMO, etc. Arrange for sample shipment and analysis with internal and external analytical chemistry laboratories Review survey results and sample analysis results Prepare characterization reports Train and mentor facility staff in all areas of characterization Liaise with CNL support group personnel and external contractors providing characterization services What we are seeking! Knowledge and Skills: Honour's Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Science from a recognized university or membership in a relevant professional organization Minimum of five years experience in a nuclear operational or decommissioning environment Knowledge and application of Radiation Protection principles, measurements, and contamination control. A minimum of Group 3 certification is required. Knowledge of Waste Management principles and practices Understanding of CNSC regulations and their application to CRL Facility Decommissioning activities Effective leadership, team building, and communication skills Strong verbal and written communication skills and a questioning attitude Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Knowledge of CNLs compliance program and experience in preparing supporting documentation Ability to: Interpret complex drawings and specifications in paper or electronic format Work under pressure with conflicting priorities and regulatory requirements Work effectively independently or in a team to meet deadlines Be available for assignments outside of the CRL site Why CNL?
