Job Description

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is a major academic health facility fully affiliated with the University of Toronto and plays a leadership role in the Ontario Health Teams System and in caring for its North Toronto community and beyond. These programs include: DAN Women & Babies, Hurvitz Brain Sciences, Holland Bone and Joint, Integrated Community, Odette Cancer, Precision Diagnostics and Therapeutics, Schulich Heart, St. Johns Rehab, Tory Trauma, Veterans, and the Integrated Surgical programs. We invite applications for an Academic Transfusion Medicine Specialist (FTE 0.5-0.6) with primary expertise in transfusion medicine practice including serology and management of transfusion needs for patients in our priority programs. Additional training or exposure in cellular therapies such as stem cell processing and apheresis, tissue banking as well as regulatory certification (e.g. FACT accreditation) will be an asset. Community outreach including travel to partner institutions within the Greater Toronto Area may be required. Applicants must possess a medical degree and hold a relevant Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (e.g. Area of Focused Competence in Transfusion Medicine), or equivalent (e.g. Anatomical Pathology/Clinical Pathology with accredited fellowship training in Transfusion Medicine), and be eligible for an independent medical license by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Candidates with a graduate degree (e.g. MSc, MBA, PhD) will be preferred. The successful applicant will thrive in a collegial inter-professional team setting as part of the Precision Diagnostics and Therapeutics program, with participation in collaborative work in education, quality improvement, clinical and translational research. In addition to medical coverage of the transfusion service, responsibilities will also include on-call and some on-site coverage with Sunnybrook-partnered hospitals, education and administrative roles (both local and with community partners) as mandated by the Division Head/Department Chief. Participation in clinical hematology or hematopathology services (e.g. core laboratory / coagulation) may be contemplated, depending on the candidates qualifications and interests. A fully accredited area of focused competency in Transfusion Medicine program is in place and teaching of residents, fellows and medical students is expected. Members will also work as part of the University of Toronto Quality in Utilization, Education and Safety in Transfusion research program in close collaboration with transfusion medicine specialists and scientists at the University of Toronto academic hospitals and partners including Canadian Blood Services and the Ontario Regional Blood Coordinating Network. The Division enjoys close and dynamic interactions with the other Divisions of the Department including hematopathology, molecular, anatomic pathology, microbiology and biochemistry. English is the primary language of work. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Uniform Minimal Level of Compensation for laboratory physicians in the Province of Ontario ($404,000 per annum, prorated to the level of service provision). Partial remuneration may also be based on fee for service for clinical hematology services, if applicable. The successful candidate will be eligible for an academic appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto.
