Overview Senior Counsel role at Scribd, Inc. The Legal Team seeks an experienced commercial and compliance lawyer to provide legal advice and guidance across all areas, ensure compliance, negotiate contracts, and manage risks to drive business growth in a complex regulatory environment. This is a key role reporting to the General Counsel. You Will / Responsibilities / What You Will Do Product Counseling & Compliance: Provide practical, solution-oriented legal advice on issues arising from the development and marketing of Scribd products and features, including privacy, data security, consumer protection (including marketing disclosures), online safety, and content moderation. Privacy Due Diligence & Assessments: Conduct privacy due diligence reviews, privacy impact assessments (PIAs), and integration planning for potential partnerships, product launches, and new technologies. Regulatory Compliance & Transparency: Develop compliance programs and oversee ongoing compliance with domestic and global privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, COPPA) and online safety laws (e.g., UK OSA and DSA). Incident Response & Security: Advise on security incident preparedness and response, including incident response plans, breach notification requirements, and post-incident communications. Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with engineering, product management, marketing, and security to implement compliance requirements and privacy-by-design practices throughout the product development lifecycle. Policy Development & Training: Develop internal policies, playbooks, and training programs to strengthen compliance awareness and risk management. Strategic Guidance on Content: Advise on content licensing, distribution, copyright, and other content-related legal matters, including generative AI technologies. Contract Negotiation & Drafting: Review and negotiate contracts (vendor agreements, data processing agreements, partnerships), focusing on privacy and security provisions; contribute to contract templates and streamlined processes. You Have / Requirements J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Minimum of 5 years of legal practice with significant experience in privacy, data protection, and product counseling as in-house or law firm attorney. Demonstrated expertise with global privacy laws and regulations (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, COPPA) and knowledge of intermediary/social media platform regulations. Experience managing security incident response and advising on breach notification requirements. Strong background in contract drafting and negotiation, particularly with data protection and security terms. Excellent judgment and ability to balance legal risk with business goals in a fast-paced environment. Clear, concise communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional partners at all levels. Ability to assess legal risk while thinking strategically and providing practical advice; strong work ethic and ability to multi-task and manage shifting priorities. Compensation & Benefits At Scribd, base pay is one part of total compensation. Salary ranges vary by location. In California, the range is $152,500 to $246,500; outside California, $125,500 to $234,250. In Canada, the range is CAD 159,000 to CAD 219,000. The position is eligible for equity and a comprehensive benefits package. Salary may vary based on experience, skills, and location.
