Job Information Do you have an interest in contributing meaningfully to pollution prevention across the NWT? Working and living in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, the Hazardous Materials Specialist will develop and implement spills prevention and management programs, be a key support in spills investigations, and in monitoring clean ups. This position also focuses on developing and implementing solutions for hazardous waste. Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Protection, you will be responsible to ensure environmental protection measures adequately protect the land, air, and water through program delivery initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess expert knowledge of current and emerging spills practices, hazardous waste management and substances policies, principles, trends, technologies and best management practices. Some of the key qualifications include: Knowledge and abilities in spill prevention, preparedness and response Knowledge and abilities in hazardous waste management for industrial, commercial, institutional and municipal sectors Skills in both site inspections and field support Effective research and analytical skills Undergraduate degree in a relevant engineering, geology, or geoscience fields, environmental science, or relevant science discipline with at least three years of related experience in hazardous substances and hazardous waste management A valid driver's license Ability to obtain and maintain H2S Alive Certification Graduate degree in a relevant engineering, geology, or geoscience fields, environmental science, or relevant science discipline with at least one year of related experience in hazardous substances and hazardous waste management; or Diploma in a relevant engineering, geology, or geoscience fields, environmental science, or relevant science discipline with at least five years of related experience in hazardous substances and hazardous waste management The GNWT offers a competitive salary, an annual northern living allowance, a generous defined benefit pension plan, and health/dental benefits in addition to relocation assistance.
