Job Description

Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer 5 days ago Be among the first 25 applicants Direct message the job poster from Verdyn At Verdyn, we engineer and deliver turnkey solutions that drive North Americas sustainable energy transition. Founded in 2019, we specialize in renewable energy, battery storage systems, power quality solutions, and advanced power electronics. Our mission is to make energy supply reliable, efficient, and greenso our clients can focus on their core business. We deliver end-to-end servicesengineering design, procurement, commissioning, maintenance, and supportfor: Power Quality Solutions Voltage regulation, DVRs, and power conditioning systems Energy Storage & DC Microgrids Fast-switching, scalable systems integrated with renewables and EV charging EV DC Fast Charging Infrastructure High-performance, modular systems ready for the growing EV market The Role Verdyn is developing a new multi-source DC/DC and AC/DC converter platform in the ~1 MW class. Were hiring a Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer to lead the hardwarefrom topology down to layout, build, and verificationwhile partnering closely with controls to deliver gridready, highreliability product. Experience with highvoltage hardware and powerquality systems (STATCOM, DVR, UPS) is a big plus. What youll do Own the power stage: select and architect converter topologies (DC/DC and AC/DC), define operating points, size devices and passive components, and drive the electrical/mechanical partitioning. Semiconductor & gatedrive design: choose SiC/IGBT devices, design gatedrive circuits (desat/softturnoff, Miller clamp), manage dv/dt, commonmode, and switching loss tradeoffs. Magnetics & passives: design/qualify inductors, transformers, busbars, snubbers, and capacitive energy storage for MWclass power conversion. Highvoltage design: specify insulation systems, creepage/clearance, insulation coordination, surge protection, and partialdischarge risk mitigation for kVclass hardware. Thermal & mechanical: model and design heatsinking/liquid cooling, validate junction/skin/proximity effects, and optimize packaging for manufacturability and service. EMI/EMC and PQ performance: plan filter architectures (CM/DM), meet conducted/radiated requirements, and ensure gridfriendly behaviour (THD, PF, flicker, harmonics). Powerquality applications: adapt the platform for STATCOM, DVR, and doubleconversion UPS usecases (series/shunt interfacing, ridethrough, fault handling). SchematictoPCB: drive highcurrent, highdv/dt layout (Kelvin source, current return control, shielding/slotting) and DFM with suppliers. Prototype & test: lead bringup, HV/LV power tests (hipot, surge, PD where applicable), efficiency/thermals, and reliability (HALT/HASS). Compliance & grid codes: plan for applicable safety and interconnection standards; create test plans and documentation to certify. Collaborate: work with controls/firmware to align sensing, protection, and realtime limits; support HIL/SIL and site commissioning as needed. Create IP: contribute to patents, design notes, and test methods that differentiate Verdyn. What you bring Bachelors or higher in Electrical Engineering (or related). 8+ years designing power electronics hardware at high power (hundreds of kW to ~1 MW), from concept through lab validation and field deployment. Handson experience with AC/DC (AFE/rectifier/inverter) and highpower DC/DC converters, modulation methods, and protection schemes. Strong command of SiC/IGBT device selection, gatedrive design, switching transients, and safeoperatingarea management. Proven PCB layout for highcurrent, highvoltage converters and EMI/EMC mitigation. Magnetics design (transformers/inductors), thermal design, and cooling system integration. Practical highvoltage safety and test practice (lockout/tagout, safe energization, fault insertion). Proficiency with simulation tools (e.g., PLECS, SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape) for loss, thermal, EMI, and controlplant interactions. Clear technical communication; disciplined documentation and change control. Nice to have Experience delivering powerquality systems (STATCOM, DVR, UPS) or BESS/DC microgrids/EV fast charging; gridforming/following familiarity. HIL/SIL exposure (Typhoon HIL, OPALRT) and collaboration with controls on current/voltage loops, PLLs, and protection logic. Highvoltage lab methods: hipot, partial discharge, surge/impulse testing, and insulation coordination per standards. Knowledge of relevant standards/codes (e.g., IEC624771/2, IEC6180051, UL1741/CSA equivalents, IEEE519/1547, EMC). Experience with reliability tools (DFMEA, derating analyses) and design for manufacturing/service. Contributions to patents or tradesecreted hardware IP. Why Verdyn Build a new converter platform with real grid impact, not incremental tweaks. Small, senior team; high ownership from day one. Opportunity to shape both the hardware architecture and the qualification path to production.
