The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of the ice surface, and operation of the refrigeration system. This role assists the Chief Engineer with the automated building controls, HVAC, electrical systems, preventative maintenance programs, and general building repairs. This position pays an hourly rate of $45.00-$50.00 CAD. Benefits for Part-Time roles include Pension matching. This position will remain open until January 9, 2026. Responsibilities Maintain and repair building equipment in a professional, responsible manner. Perform in-house repairs, when feasible. Keep accurate maintenance, inspection and repair records. Perform ice rink preparation and maintenance to maintain a high-quality ice sheet for team practices and games. Assist in the operation, inspection, and adjustment of the refrigeration plant operation, including start-up and shut-down of plant and related equipment. Train part-time staff by providing or coordinating staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies and participate in appropriate disciplinary procedures. Plan, direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for facility maintenance and operations; coordinate with staff to identify problems and assign work activities, projects and programs. Assist with strategic planning for building improvements and yearly capital improvements. Assist with the setup of events; coordinate facility arrangements with concessionaires and vendors; direct and monitor the work of contractors, engineers, and architects on building projects. Order supplies and materials for maintenance programs within budget guidelines; receive and maintain supplies. Maintain hazardous materials communication program, material safety data sheets and required records and permits. Stay informed of changes in relevant regulations. Develop and maintain a record-keeping system including inputting data and preventive maintenance into computerized maintenance management software. Responsible for operations of the refrigeration plant, HVAC and related equipment in the absence of the Chief Engineer. Participate in staff, production and manager meetings; complete weekly reports. Perform duties in a safe manner following Facility Procedures, Occupational Health & Safety Rules, Violence in the Workplace policies, and W.C.B. regulations. Perform other duties as assigned. Physical Demands and Work Environment Physical Demands : While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee will frequently stand, walk, climb stairs and/or ladders; use hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and will use close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and adjust focus. Work Environment : The essential functions are performed indoors and outdoors in weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually moderate to loud. Qualifications Minimum Refrigeration Operator, B or 4th class refrigeration endorsement Experience in general maintenance & repair of HVAC or related building systems, and knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems. At least 5 years of experience in ice installation and ice maintenance, and operation and maintenance of ice resurfacing machines (RFABC. Certified Ice Technician designation preferred). An understanding of supervisory principles associated with training casual staff is necessary. A demonstrated understanding of building control systems and refrigeration systems. A demonstrated understanding of and ability to maintain the buildings environmental, mechanical and electrical systems. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, days, evenings, holidays, and extended days as needed.
