Job Description

Our busy SE client is expanding their team to include an Senior Electrical Engineer. This role is an initial 6 month contract with the possibility of permanent hire. Reporting to the Project Manager, Electrical & Controls, the primary function of the Electrical Engineer Power Systems is to advance and finalize the engineering blueprints for complex electrical infrastructure utilized within our clients Major Projects division. Advantages Opportunities for Advancement Competitive Compensation Incentive Programs Safety Focused Responsibilities Design & Engineering Provide technical support to the business development team in determining appropriate grid connection strategies, switchgear selection, transformer specifications, and Motor Control Centers (MCCs) for power generation solutions. Develop Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV), and High Voltage (HV) One-Line Diagrams for power generation systems, with a specific focus on protective relay schemes, metering requirements, and system grounding. Execute detailed design of generator paralleling systems, including the configuration of protective relay settings. Create electrical schematic and wiring diagrams for power distribution and control systems for engine auxiliaries and associated equipment such as ventilation fans and lighting. Generate comprehensive load schedules and perform sizing calculations for electrical equipment. Conduct arc flash analysis and coordinate protective devices across the power system. Specify electrical apparatus and components, applying sound engineering judgment and adherence to electrical codes and standards. Review technical drawings from external vendors and produce interconnection diagrams to ensure accurate interface and scope alignment. Documentation & Project Management Produce the Electrical Bill of Materials (BOM) and authorize its release to the procurement team. Analyze and review interconnection agreements with utility providers, acting either directly or on the customer's behalf. Prepare detailed electrical construction drawings and specifications in collaboration with internal mechanical, architectural, and civil/structural design teams. Draft electrical construction work scopes to facilitate the bidding and proposal process with external contractors. Manage and consult with external suppliers and contractors to clarify equipment specifications and scope of delivery. Construction & Commissioning Support Conduct site inspections of contractor installations to ensure full compliance with 'Issued For Construction' documentation. Assist in the programming and field commissioning of electrical equipment. Act as a technical liaison with internal team members, both in the office and at project sites, by responding to Requests for Information (RFIs) throughout project execution. Articulate complex technical information clearly to internal service teams and clients, domestically and internationally. Qualifications Currently registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in a Canadian province, with a minimum of ten to 15 years of experience specializing in power system design. A thorough working knowledge and practical application of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), including rules for conductor sizing, overcurrent protection selection, and installation methods. Demonstrated understanding of electrical power generation and synchronizing controls within systems utilizing spark-ignited reciprocating engines. Proven expertise in power distribution circuits classified as Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV), and High Voltage (HV). Capability to engineer and design One-Line Diagrams for power distribution, Motor Control Centers (MCCs), industrial building electrical systems, and protection/control schemes. Practical experience in selecting and specifying major power equipment, including transformers, switchgear, VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), and associated infrastructure. Familiarity with essential power systems, including generators and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), substations, metering equipment, and primary/secondary switchgear. Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical is required. Working knowledge of electrical engineering analysis software, such as ETAP, to conduct studies for relay coordination, load flow, short circuit analysis, and motor starting performance.
