The effective date of this appointment is flexible, and tentatively planned for fall of 2026. The Trauma Program is verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level-1 trauma centre. The Division of General Surgery at St. Michaels Hospital is comprised of a highly cohesive group of surgeons whose clinical practices are focused on colorectal surgical oncology, breast cancer surgical oncology, benign colorectal diseases, trauma/acute care surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction and biliary tract disease. The successful candidate will provide high-quality care to patients with trauma and emergency general surgical conditions. The successful candidate will join a group of five trauma surgeons whose clinical practice is focused on the care of injured patient. These surgeons attend on a rotating basis on the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery service. Critically ill trauma and emergency general surgery patients are cared for in a closed trauma and neurosurgery critical care unit and medical/surgical intensive care unit. The successful candidate will hold certification in General Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent. The successful candidate will have completed at least one year of post General Surgery residency fellowship training in Trauma Surgery / Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited, or equivalent program https://www.royalcollege.ca/rcsite/specialty-discipline-recognition/categories/discipline-recognition-areas-focused-competence-afc-programs-e. The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible for licensure from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. Excellence in clinical care, a record of academic achievement, and a commitment to teaching and mentorship are prerequisites. A demonstrated record of professionalism and collaboration is required and a key feature of the Department of Surgery. The successful candidate will contribute to the academic mandate of the Trauma Program, Hospital, and University through scholarship, education, and creative professional activity. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required. The successful candidate will possess graduate-level training to enhance scientific enquiry in any of public health, health services, translational or basic science research, clinical epidemiology surgical education, or quality improvement. We seek a Surgeon-Investigator, or Surgeon-Teacher to contribute in meaningful and tangible ways to the academic impact of the Trauma Program at St. Michaels Hospital and the University of Toronto. The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of at Assistant/ Associate/ Full Professor in the Department of Surgery, Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The Trauma Program is one of two adult trauma programs in the GTA and is a major referral centre for the Province. Trauma care is a declared priority program at St. Michaels Hospital. The Department of Surgery also houses provincial programs in neurosurgery, cardiac/vascular surgery, and renal transplantation. The care of injured patients is well supported by clinical and academic excellence in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Orthopedic, Plastic and Vascular Surgery.
