Job Description

In the role of the Chemical Engineer, you will primarily work on testing, optimizing and scaling-up a proprietary class of microbial fuel cells for treatment of acid rock drainage and metal-laden wastewater. You will report directly to the Engineering Lead and work alongside chemical and biological engineers, mining engineers, electrochemical engineers and biotechnologists. Responsibilities Characterize kinetics of growth and metal deposition of exoelectrogenic bacteria. Develop mathematical models for substrate consumption and electron transfer rates Formulate and optimize culture media recipes. Investigate a novel class of flow-based microbial fuel cells. Fabricate and test fuel cell prototypes based on computer simulations. Optimize fuel cell performance and determine scale-up factors. Assist in genetic engineering of the exoelectrogenic microorganisms for improved substrate oxidation and metal deposition. Perform technoeconomic analyses to guide field deployment. Work on software development for logistics and operations. Collaborate with internal teams to ensure successful completion of projects, including providing support to engineering, R&D, business development and operations teams, when required. Author reports and other technical documents. Set up, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on specialized laboratory equipment. Performs other related duties as required. Qualifications Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline. Additional education or training in Microbial Electrochemical Technologies, Electrochemistry, or Renewable Energy Systems (preferred but not required). Experience with bioprocess engineering, electrochemical systems, or microbial fuel cell technologies is strongly preferred. Demonstrated skills in laboratory research, process optimization, and prototype development. Familiarity with advanced modelling tools, experimental design, and technoeconomic analysis methods.
