Job Description

SCOPE The Regional Safety & Wellness Manager, Western Canada is responsible for ensuring the effective application and maintenance of the wellness program across multiple plants and distribution centers in order to: Promote a culture of accident prevention and accountability through collaboration and participation by all associates Be an agent for the effective implementation of the ISO45001 safety standard (roadmap) and safety practices that minimize risk and reduce costs related to workplace injuries and/or non-compliance fines and penalties The scope of the Regional Safety & Wellness Manager, Western Canada will be focused in three main areas: a) Financial Make recommendations regarding necessary remedial steps that may involve significant financial expenditures and that will reduce the companys financial liability; make recommendations for safety equipment purchases and/or training expenditures; contract the service of external consultants to assist with specialized health and safety matters and/or issues. b) Operating Develop, evaluate and ensure the effective implementation of safety and wellness policies, procedures and practices for legislative and corporate compliance and effectiveness; conduct technical safety audits; Provide frontline support and direction to correct as well as make recommendations to address deficiencies, mitigate risk and improve programs. c) Personnel Provide advice and guidance to supervisors, managers and Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs); constructively engage team to influence the accomplishment of safety objectives and opportunities and in balancing the importance of associate safety with business needs. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Develop and maintain occupational safety and wellness policies and procedures to facilitate and ensure compliance with legislative and corporate requirements. Provide advice, guidance and support to operational management and JHSCs in the development of safety related initiatives and procedures. Coach and assist operational management in the execution of safety and wellness objectives Regularly audit facility performance against elements of the safety program including but not limited to confined space, working at heights, LOTO, internal scorecard, accident investigation, safety task observations, safe work practice (SWP) documentation and other items as directed. Provide options to mitigate or eliminate gaps. Maintain the accident tracking log, track and analyze statistics/data to facilitate the prioritization of mitigation strategies. Liaise, guide, and act as a resource for the JHSCs and other committees as required in the plants and distribution centers to ensure legislative and corporate compliance. Advise operational management of training requirements to ensure legislative and corporate compliance and conduct or arrange such training in areas including but not limited SWP, LOTO, new hire orientation, hot work, heat stress, TDG, forklift certification, etc. Participate in the investigation of the causes and effects of workplace accidents to identify and determine effective remedial actions and to ensure remedial action plans are implemented. Search and source out appropriate health and safety equipment, tools and devices to ensure the best and most cost-effective equipment for use in conducting workplace assessments or for use by departments in their daily operations (e.g. respirators, air monitoring devices etc.). Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED SKILLS Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and three (6) years related experience. This role requires someone who has a high degree of self-management discipline, who can work with minimum direction and manage competing priorities and workload at multiple site locations. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record developing and coordinating safety programs, conducting accident investigations, developing and delivering safety training and carrying out health and safety responsibilities in an industrial or construction industry environment. This will be supplemented with a solid working knowledge of and experience interpreting with relevant legislation Candidates should possess a demonstrated awareness of current and emerging occupation health issues including hazard identification and risk assessment, ergonomic design, protective equipment and clothing, confined space entry, working at heights, energy control, hearing conservation, and constructor safety. Advanced communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to effectively influence and secure the cooperation of others, and to facilitate positive work relationships and deal with contentious situations and issues. Excellent analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills including knowledge of effective workplace safety audit techniques are required. A demonstrated knowledge of adult learning techniques and principles as well as the ability to develop effective training programs would be highly valued skills in this role.
