They also lead and oversee the well-being of large teams of highly skilled professional technicians responsible for system analysis, troubleshooting, and maintenance to ensure maximum performance.The main role of these officers is to demonstrate leadership, provide advice, and offer technical expertise to ensure the maintenance and proper functioning of the following naval combat systems:Submarine and surface warfare systems, including their munitionsSubmarine and surface detection systemsNavigation systemsCommunication systemsCommand and control systemsData processing systemsElectronic warfare systemsWork EnvironmentThese officers work aboard ships or submarines of the Royal Canadian Navy fleet and in land establishments. They may serve as the head of the maritime combat systems engineering department, facing challenges of life at sea while leading large personnel teams. On land, they can be employed anywhere in Canada, such as Halifax, Victoria, the National Capital Region, or abroad. The roles are diverse and involve understanding current and future technologies. They may also hold staff, instructor, or administrative positions requiring technical skills.If you choose a career in the Regular Force, you will be posted to your first base after completing the required training. While there is some flexibility regarding postings, not all requests can be accommodated, so relocations are expected during your career. If you join the Reserve Force, you will do so through a specific reserve unit, working part-time typically one evening per week and some weekends, with the possibility of full-time employment.Enlistment ProgramsDirect enlistment optionsSubsidized study optionsIf you already hold a university degree, the CAF will determine if your program meets the criteria for the role, and you may be sent directly to on-the-job training after obtaining your basic military qualification. This qualification is required before any deployment.Officer Training Program (PFOR)Due to the requirement for officers to have a university degree, the CAF subsidizes undergraduate studies at the Royal Military College. Admitted individuals become officer cadets, studying relevant military and academic subjects. In rare cases, depending on CAF needs, cadets may attend other Canadian universities. You should apply to the Royal Military College but also consider other universities as a backup.TrainingAfter enlistment, you will undergo 12 weeks of basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC. Topics include military knowledge, leadership principles, regulations, weapons handling, and first aid. You will participate in exercises and physical conditioning. The course is offered in English or French and must be successfully completed to proceed.Following basic training, language training may be available, lasting 2 to 9 months depending on your skills. You will then take courses at NCSM Venture in Esquimalt, BC, including an 11-week naval engineering familiarization course, and a 28-week course on combat systems engineering, including a 7-week onboard experience.Opportunities for specialized skills training include software management, guided weapon systems, radar analysis, electronic warfare, satellite communications, and cybersecurity. Advanced instruction in combat systems, weapon systems, underwater acoustics, and naval architecture is also available.Further career progression may include advanced courses and a nine-week Royal Canadian Navy officer training course in Victoria, BC, including a four-week sea deployment.Equivalent Civilian JobsNo direct civilian equivalents are listed. #J-18808-Ljbffr
