This position is primarily responsible for assisting in the planning, design, development and management of structural steel projects. The challenge of this position is finding the right balance between delivering project results while gaining the knowledge and skills to do so with often conflicting deadlines. This position works Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position works under the supervision of the Engineering Manager. Overtime does not occur regularly but when required it is a condition of continued employment. Travel is required and of a local nature only. The incumbent is responsible for other tasks as directed, on a permanent or ad-hoc basis, for which the incumbent is qualified or for which the incumbent can be reasonably trained. Qualifications Education/Experience (preferred): Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering Experience is considered an asset Certifications, Certificates, Licenses (preferred) Registered as an EIT with Engineers Nova Scotia Skills and Abilities Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business correspondence and documents (such as drawings and specifications). Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients and other employees. Math Ability: Ability to work with math concepts such as: percentages, ratios, areas and volumes and apply them to practical situations. Competence in algebra and solving equations is required. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram or schedule form. Conceptual Ability: Ability to think in a manner of abstract thought and reflection, as well as creative thinking and problem solving; and apply this to practical situations. Spatial Ability: Ability to visualize an object in both two and three dimensions. Professional / Technical Knowledge (preferred) Computer Skills: AutoCAD, Microsoft Office (Excel, Word), RAM, Profis, Safi and various other engineering related software as required to perform the job in the most current manner. Responsibilities Steel Design/Quality Assurance On a weekly basis: Assists in the design of structural steel, connections and miscellaneous metals. Assists with the Marid Quality Program and ensures that quality requirements are adhered to. Checks erection drawings and shop details for changes that may need to be made and implement changes as required. Corresponds with customers and clients to communicate design and contractual information. Occasionally draws shop details or sketches with AutoCAD, in Bluebeam or by hand. Participates in site visits and inspections to ensure that work conforms to design drawings. Reviews erection drawings and ensures conformance to building codes, specifications and industry standards. Informs customers of irregularities and/or changes and ensures that all alterations are corrected. Planning On a weekly basis: Assists estimators in the preparation of estimates, by providing preliminary calculations, sketches, and designs. Assists Project Managers and ensures tasks are moving forward according to plan and budget. Familiarize themselves with the advantages of structural steel and strives to achieve a better understanding of the steel construction industry. Miscellaneous Participate in monthly toolbox meetings. Ensures Marid policies, procedures and processes are followed. Contribute to the ongoing initiatives of eliminating accidents and incidents in the workplace. Contributes to the ongoing efforts of ensuring a respectful workplace for all employees. Contribute to the ongoing efforts of the quality assurance and LEAN program.
